May is National One-Stop Month! What is a One-Stop? The Cortland Works Career Center is our County’s certified One-Stop Career Center. It is a place where staff from multiple agencies can address your employment needs, whether you are a business or a job seeker. Job seekers have at their disposal a Resource Room with information on over 900 different occupations including how to start your own business, computers with internet access, copiers, fax machines, telephones, and listings for local, state, and national jobs. Staff will help jobseekers create a resume, print it on quality paper and even mail it. Businesses can meet with a representative of our Business Service Team who can address their specific needs whether it is finding information on tax breaks, posting job openings, or reviewing current labor laws. We can provide businesses with a conference room for recruiting new workers, or training their current workforce. Businesses can borrow tapes, books, cds or dvds from our Lending Library. In celebration of One-Stop Month, we have created a new website. Our home page reflects the fact that we are part of a two county Workforce Investment Area, under one Workforce Investment Board (WIB). During May our local WIB Director, Judy Davison, will be releasing the State of the Workforce Report for our area and it will be available on the website. On our home page you can click on a map of our county, or our sister county, Cayuga, to take you to a complete listing of our programs and services. You can also access many of the Department of Labor forms online and reference materials are right there for businesses to use. For job seekers, there is a calendar of workshops (you can even sign up online) and templates to create resumes as well as “Hot Job” listings and articles of interest. Youth, age 14-21, can get information about the various programs available to them and even fill out an application for our Summer Youth Employment Program online . The Cortland County Employment and Training Department is just one of eight agencies co- located at 99 Main Street in the Cortland Works Career Center. The Center is a partnership of many agencies coming together to help Cortland area residents and businesses have the strongest workforce possible. Please visit our new website at: www.workforcenewyork.com/cortlandworks. On May 20th we will be hosting an all day open house and we invite the whole community to come down visit your one-stop career center.
