Superintendent of Water Sewer – Village of Marathon Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Village of Marathon Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 6/6/1986 Amended: 1/30/1995 SUPERINTENDENT OF WATER/SEWER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the efficient operation, maintenance, repair and inspection of a municipality’s water distribution system, sewer lines, lift station and related equipment. The work also involves the performance of a variety of semi-skilled and building and grounds maintenance activities. The incumbent supervises and actively participates in work projects. Work is performed under general supervision with considerable leeway for the use of independent judgment. Direct supervision is exercised over subordinate workers assigned to projects. Due to the nature of the work, the incumbent may be required to be on call evenings and weekends. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Supervises and participates in the repair of water breaks, water meters, hydrant leaks, flushing lines and the installation of parts and fittings; Supervises and participates in meter reading and recording duties; Supervises and participates in the maintenance, inspection and cleaning of the municipal sewer lines and appurtenances; Inspects lateral connections and the installation of water meters; Records readings of gauges and scales; regulates and adjusts pumps, valves and related equipment; Takes samples of water for testing; Insures the proper care and safe use of tools, trucks and equipment used on work projects; Maintains proper maps and records of sewer and water lines hydrant positions, lateral connections and assists in stake out of town water system for water service requests; Orders supplies, maintains inventory and prepares budget estimates and records; Responds to customer complaints regarding water taste, dirty water, pressure problems, high bills that may require further investigation; Consults with supervisor and/or professional personnel regarding unusual or emergency situations; Operates backhoe, dump truck, sewer rooter, air compressor, lawn mower and other related equipment; Performs minor maintenance to municipal buildings, grounds, and equipment used in connection with the work. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and equipment used in the efficient maintenance, repair and installation of water and sewer lines and related appurtenances; ---PAGE BREAK--- Superintendent of Water Sewer – Village of Marathon Page 2 I 2 Good knowledge of the location and layout of water and sewer lines in the municipality; Working knowledge of water mains, valves, fittings and hydrants; Good knowledge of the repair, setting and installation of water meters; Ability to train and supervise the work of others; Ability to make inspections of installation of water and sewer projects; Ability to maintain accurate records; Ability to read and work from plans and sketches; Ability to deal effectively with the public; Mechanical aptitude; Dependability; Good judgment; Willingness to be on call and respond to emergency situations; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma and one year operating experience in an Operating Water System plus one and one-half (1 ½ ) years experience at a Wastewater Treatment Facility. SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: Class 2B Certificate (water system), Class D Certificate (water system) and Class 3A Certificate (wastewater) prior to or ability to obtain at the time of employment.
