Automotive Mechanic Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Cortland County Civil Division: City of Cortland Jurisdictional Class: Non-Competitive Adopted: 10/15/80 Amended: 10/23/02; 11/3/02 AUTOMOTIVE MECHANIC DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for performing skilled repair and maintenance of automotive and construction equipment. The incumbent also performs a variety of unskilled labor and general maintenance tasks. The work is performed under the direct supervision of the Superintendent of Public Works or his/her/designee. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Repairs or replaces parts such as starters, pumps, generators, and alternators; Repairs or replaces axles, springs, drive shafts, brakes, universals, and shocks; Replaces exhaust system components; Performs tune-ups on vehicles by replacing or adjusting spark plugs, points, condensers, chokes, and distributors; Repairs and maintains equipment such as small engines, chain saws, and pumps; Maintains records of vehicle maintenance and repair; Performs minor welding repairs to frames, plows, and grates; May perform minor electrical and plumbing work on buildings and equipment needed; May perform a variety of unskilled labor such as patching streets, installing sewer lines, and repairing sidewalks; Operates motor equipment on an occasional basis. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the methods, tools, and terminology of the automotive repair trade; Skill in performing automotive and construction equipment maintenance and repair; Skill in the safe and efficient operation of motor equipment; Ability to follow oral and written directions; Ability to prepare simple written records; Dexterity; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Either: Graduation from a New York State registered or regionally accredited two year technical school or community college with a degree or certificate in automotive technology or mechanics; OR Graduation from a high school or GED with a certificate from a vocational program in automotive mechanics and two years of experience in an automotive repair shop performing minor repair and maintenance of automotive equipment under the supervision or direction of a lead/head automotive mechanic; OR Two years of experience in an automotive repair shop performing minor repair and ---PAGE BREAK--- Automotive Mechanic Page 2 I 2 maintenance of automotive equipment under the supervision or direction of a lead/head automotive mechanic; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of and above. NOTE: Degree must have been awarded by a college or university accredited by a regional, national, or specialized agency recognized as an accrediting agency by the U.S. Department of Education/U.S. Secretary of Education. If the degree was awarded by an educational institution outside of the United States and its territories, applicant must provide independent verification of equivalency.
