Jurisdiction: City of Cortland Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: August 21, 2006 BUILDING MAINTENANCE SUPERVISOR DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This position involves responsibility for supervising and participating in the maintenance and cleaning operations for the City of Cortland. The incumbent plans, directs and participates in maintenance and cleaning activities. The work is performed under the general supervision of the Director of Administration and Finance. Supervision is exercised over the work of parttime Cleaners. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES: (Illustrative only) Supervises building cleaning activities and employees, including assigning duties; Performs minor maintenance projects, such as painting, basic carpentry, minor plumbing, etc.; Purchases supplies and oversees supply inventory; Monitors departmental budget; Hires contractors/vendors to perform larger repair projects; Administers maintenance contracts; Oversees utility services for electrical, phone and natural gas; Interacts with suppliers to ensure quality of service. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of standard cleaning, building maintenance and repair practices; Ability to supervise work of others engaged in building and grounds maintenance activities; Ability to communicate orally and in writing; Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; Ability to compile date and write reports; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Possession of a high school diploma or GED and three years supervisory experience in the fields of building maintenance or construction. NOTE: Possession of NYS Driver’s License is required.
