Assistant Code Enforcement Officer Page 1 I 2 Jurisdiction: Town of Cortlandville Jurisdictional Class: Competitive Adopted: 05/20/09 ASSISTANT CODE ENFORCEMENT OFFICER DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves responsibility for the enforcement of state and municipal building, housing, multiple residence and fire prevention laws, codes and ordinances. The incumbent also performs standardized clerical tasks using a computer for the entry and retrieval of information using software to produce printed material such as letters, memoranda and forms. The work is performed under the supervision of the Code Enforcement Officer with leeway allowed for the exercise of independent decision making in carrying out the details of the work. Does related work as required. TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES (Illustrative only): Reviews and forwards initial permits and building plans to the Code Enforcement Officer; Receives and processes building code complaints; Distributes various permit applications and explains proper filing procedures; Consults with appropriate resource personnel to resolve questions of the laws, rules and ordinances; Directs individuals to correction violations within a specified period of time; Manages all information regarding the third party fire inspection process, including, but not limited to data entry, billing, accounts receivable tracking, re-inspection activities, and year-end report generation; Explains various aspects of laws, codes and ordinances to property owners, building contractors and other interested parties; Prepares routine reports, correspondence, statistical data and other written material in final or draft form using handwritten, rough drafts, marked copy, oral recordings or data from various equipment as the source material; Attends training courses required for mandated certification; Attends seminars, conferences and meetings related to the work; Assists in building inspections during construction phase of projects. FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of the provisions of the State and local laws, codes and ordinances to be enforced; Good knowledge of the methods, materials and terminology of the building construction trade; Working knowledge of modern office terminology, procedures, equipment and business English; Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications; Ability to conduct inspections; Ability to communicate effectively with others; Ability to follow oral and written instructions; Sound professional judgment; Good powers of observation; Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position. ---PAGE BREAK--- Assistant Code Enforcement Officer Page 2 I 2 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Graduation from high school or possession of a high school equivalency diploma AND satisfactory completion of the basic training program required by Part 434 of Title 19 of the Official Compilation of Codes, Rules and Regulations of the State of New York, minimum standards for Code Enforcement Personnel in New York State.
