Columbia County Library Board Meeting October 10, 2023 • 11:30 am In attendance: Columbia County Library Board  Russell Wilder, Board Chair  Windy Bedingfield, Treasurer  Tripp Calloway  Barry Paschal  Lindsey Brantley  Marlena Bergeron Library Staff • Mary Lin Maner, Library Director • Devin Morris, Regional Admin Coordinator Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 11:31 am. Approval of Agenda The agenda was approved. Approval of Minutes The September minutes were approved with one correction. Friends of the Libraries  See Friends Treasurer Report.  October 15-21 is National Friends of the Library Week Treasurer Report  See Treasurer Report County Library Manager Report  See September Stat Report. Report  LibTech grant items are being selected and request will be submitted soon. Unfinished Business Book Reconsideration Requests: The subcommittee discussed their findings on the books with the rest of the board members. The person who submitted the reconsideration was invited to present their reasoning. For:  Russell Wilder  Windy Bedingfield  Tripp Calloway  Barry Paschal  Lindsey Brantley Against:  Marlena Bergeron Motion approved. I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, Category: Fiction Young Adult Reconsideration submitted by: Bill Murphy, absent Motion to reclassify I’ll Give You the Sun to Adult Fiction from YA Fiction. For:  Russell Wilder  Windy Bedingfield  Tripp Calloway  Barry Paschal  Lindsey Brantley Against:  Marlena Bergeron Motion approved. Teach Your Dragon about Diversity by Steve Herman, Category: Easy Non Fiction Reconsideration submitted by: Priscilla Bence, present Ms. Bence withdrew her request for reconsideration stating that she did not fill out a reconsideration form for this book and did not wish for it to be reconsidered. All board members had a copy of Ms. Bence’s reconsideration request, and the subcommittee had read the book but did not move forward with the reconsideration. ---PAGE BREAK--- True You: A Gender Journey by Gwen Agna, Category: Easy Non Fiction Reconsideration submitted by: Priscilla Bence, present Motion to reclassify True You: A Gender Journey to Adult Non-Fiction from Easy Non-Fiction. For:  Russell Wilder  Windy Bedingfield  Marlena Bergeron  Tripp Calloway  Barry Paschal  Lindsey Brantley Motion approved. The Rainbow Parade by Emily Parade, Category: Picture Reconsideration submitted by: Connie Melear, absent Motion to remove The Rainbow Parade from the library collection. For:  Russell Wilder  Windy Bedingfield  Tripp Calloway  Barry Paschal  Lindsey Brantley Against:  Marlena Bergeron Motion approved. New Business: The board discussed limiting Reconsideration Requests to active library patrons only, meaning you must have a valid library card to submit a request. They would also prefer the submitter to have actually read the book. Board will discuss further via email. The board also discussed creating a new age classification between Juvenile and Young Adult. Russell requested that library staff bring more information about how age classifications for books are determined to the next meeting.
