1 Columbia County Library Board Meeting January 10, 2024 • 11:30 am In attendance: Columbia County Library Board Russell Wilder Tripp Calloway Dr. Sandra Carraway Lindsey Brantley Windy Bedingfield, Treasurer Barry Paschal Absent 2 Board positions are currently vacant Library Staff • Mary Lin Maner, Library Director • Devin Morris, Regional Admin Coordinator Other Allison Couch, District 4 Commissioner Glenn Kennedy, Deputy County Manager John Luton, Director, Community Services Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 11:30 am. Approval of Agenda November and December 2023 agendas were approved. Approval of Minutes November and December 2023 minutes were approved. Election of New Officers Dr. Sandra Calloway, Chair Lindsey Brantley, Vice Chair Windy Bedingfield, Treasurer Mary Lin Maner/Devin Morris, Secretary Friends of the Libraries See Friends Treasurer Report. Treasurer Report See Treasurer Report County Library Manager Report See 2023 Year in Review Report. The March 12 and April 9 meeting dates needed to be rescheduled due to conflicts. • Board all voted in favor to change dates to March 14 and April 18 and to approve the remaining calendar dates as originally scheduled. ---PAGE BREAK--- 2 A discussion was had on whether the titles that were reconsidered in October 2023 meeting should be reconsidered again since additional guidance was provided by the county during the November 2023 meeting. Titles: The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson True You: A Gender Journey by Gwen Agna The Rainbow Parade by Emily Parade Motion to reconsider the titles again under the new guidance at the February 2024 meeting. For: Dr. Sandra Carraway Russell Wilder Windy Bedingfield Tripp Calloway Lindsey Brantley Against: Barry Paschal Motion approved. Report Lib Tech Grant items have arrived and are being distributed. Summer Reading planning has begun. Book Reconsideration Requests: The subcommittee discussed their findings on the books with the rest of the board members. The person who submitted the reconsideration was invited to present their reasoning. The board then discussed and voted on the book. Motion was made by Lindsey Brantley to reconsider The Real Riley Mayes by Rachel Elliott again. Motion was made to leave book as currently shelved in Juvenile, but recommend to Mary Lin that it be moved to Young Adult. You Know Me Well by Nina LaCour Reconsideration submitted by: Priscilla Bence Motion was made to move reconsideration discussion to February board meeting, due to other decisions that may have an effect on the outcome of the reconsideration. Old New Business carried from December 2023 meeting: Updates to the Reconsideration Form o Board all voted in favor to add the following requirements: Titles may only be submitted for reconsideration every 24 months. Only submissions from Columbia County residents will be reviewed. Only titles owned by the Columbia County Library will be reviewed. o Board will review and discuss via email on any other changes and vote on final version in February meeting. New Requests for Consideration o Our Dining Table by Mita Ori Priscilla Bence rescinded reconsideration once she was made aware that it was an Adult title. o A Different Kind of Normal by Abigail Balfe Subcommittee: Dr. Sandra Carraway, Windy Bedingfield, Barry Paschal o Tango: My Childhood Backwards and in High Heels by Justin Vivian Bond Title is not owned by the Columbia County Library and will not be reconsidered. ---PAGE BREAK--- 5 o Jade Fire Gold by June C. Tan Title is not owned by the Columbia County Library and will not be reconsidered. o Drama by Raina Telgemier Title was reviewed in September 2022 and has not met time limit restriction to be reconsidered again. o The Great Big Book of Families by Mary Hoffman Title was reviewed in December 2022 and has not met time limit restriction to be reconsidered again. o Bathe the Cat by Alice McGinty Title was reviewed in December 2022 and has not met time limit restriction to be reconsidered again. A motion was made to change the quorum requirements from 5 members to 4 members, all voted in favor. New Business: Requested titles for order for December 2023 & January 2024 Board voted in favor to approve all Adult titles for purchase. Board is still reviewing Children’s and Young Adult titles as library staff continue to look for solutions to provide the information that the board has requested.
