POLLUTION CAN HARM FISH PLEASE-HELP PROTECT OUR WATERS Every contaminant that is discharged into the storm sewer system eventually finds its way to our local waterways such as streams, creeks, and rivers. Aquatic wildlife, such as plants, fish, and other small critters, depend upon a clean envi ronment to live and thrive. When their environment is threatened by pollution, these organisms can die. This public education on storm drains, where they flow to, & how each person can help to prevent flooding & pollu tion alerts everyone to help keep the storm drain systems free of debris and litter. This will help protect our water quality and our eco system. The local economy also benefits because a clean environment attracts new businesses. FROM THE SKY . To THE GROU 1D . . The next time you take a walk around your neigh borhood, take a moment to notice the openings or inlets that line the roadways. These openings, also known as storm drains, capture storm water run-off from the roadway and channels it › help pipes ditches to prevent - flooding. When it rains, the storm water run-off encounters pollutants commonly found deposited on roadways, drive ways, and even in your own yard. Unlike the sani tary sewer system, which carries water from your indoor drains to a treatment facility, the storm drain system releases untreated storm water into chan nels, creeks, and eventually the Savannah River. Polluted storm water run-off can harm humans as well as wildlife. The River Is Closer Than You Think 0,10,YQU KNOW.
