Columbia County Library Board Meeting September 12, 2023 • 11:30 am In attendance: Columbia County Library Board Russell Wilder, Board Chair Windy Bedingfield, Treasurer Tripp Calloway Barry Paschal Lindsey Brantley Absent Marlena Bergeron Library Staff • Mary Lin Maner, Library Director • Devin Morris, Regional Admin Coordinator Other • Allison Couch, Commissioner, District 4 • Gary Richardson, Commissioner, District 3 • Glenn Kennedy, Deputy County Manager • John Luton, Director, Community Services Call to Order The meeting was called to order at 11:30 am. Approval of Agenda The agenda was approved. Approval of Minutes The May minutes were approved without comment. Friends of the Libraries See Friends Treasurer Report. Friends will be paying for building stations supplies for the CSRA Brick Con. Treasurer Report See Treasurer Report County Library Manager Report See Summer Stat Report. See Summer Reading Wrap-up Report. CSRA Brick Con will return September 30 & October 1. ---PAGE BREAK--- Report LibTech grant will have limitations on what can be purchased. Unfinished Business None. New Business Book Reconsideration Requests: There were 9 titles submitted for reconsideration, the board has decided to split the books between the October & November meetings. Subcommittee for October: Tripp Calloway Marlena Bergeron Lindsey Brantley Books to be considered: The Black Flamingo by Dean Atta, Category: Fiction Young Adult I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, Category: Fiction Young Adult Teach Your Dragon about Diversity by Steve Herman, Category: Easy Non Fiction True You: A Gender Journey by Gwen Agna, Category: Easy Non Fiction The Rainbow Parade by Emily Parade, Category: Picture Subcommittee for November: Russell Wilder Tripp Calloway Marlena Bergeron Books to be considered: What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli, Category: Fiction Young Adult The Real Riley Mayes by Rachel Elliott, Category: Juvenile Graphic Novel Momma and Mommy and Me in the Middle by Nina LaCour, Category: Picture Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli, Category: Fiction Young Adult The subcommittees will discuss their findings on the books with the rest of the board members, then the person who submitted the reconsideration will be given time to present their reasoning. The board will then discuss and vote on the book. ---PAGE BREAK--- Changes to Constitution & Bylaws: Commissioners Allison Couch and Gary Richardson, along with Deputy County Manager Glenn Kennedy came to inform the board that changes are being made to the Library Boards Constitution and Bylaws to better fit the needs for the County and the responsibility for the board. Implement full meetings, no breaks for June-August or January. Only in person meetings, no virtual attendees will be allowed. Board members will be tasked with approving the purchase of books, more details will be given in the future. Requests to Speak: Members of the public Greta Vega and Teresa Johnson came to speak about the recent news reports of other members of the public trying to have certain books removed from the library. Next meeting: Tuesday, October 10, 2023 at 11:30 am at the Columbia County Library. Meeting adjourned at 12:09 pm.
