A #1 plastic, often referred to as PET or PETE, is a polyethylene terephthalate. PET is a resin and a polyester. PET is often used in containers for water, soft drinks, household cleaners, food products and some cosmetics. PET containers will be marked with the #1 recycle symbol on or near the bottom, and may or may not include the letters PET or PETE. A #2 plastic, often referred to HDPE or PEHD, is a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum. HDPE is often used in containers for milk, juice, laundry detergents, and household cleaners. HDPE containers will be marked with the #2 recycle symbol on or near the bottom, and may or may not contain the letters HDPE or PEHD. Effective 11/1/15 ---PAGE BREAK--- Recycling Your #1 and #2 Plastics 1. Check the base of your container for the resin code. Once you have identified the #1 or #2 resin code: 2. Remove and discard the lid/cap. 3. Rinse the container. 4. Bring the container to the Recycling Center at 531 15th Street. 5. Place in the properly marked bin. *It takes 14 20oz PET bottles to make one square foot of carpet. *It takes 85 20oz PET bottles to make enough fiberfill for a sleeping bag. *Recycled HDPE can be used to make more bottles, floor tile and lumber. *Approximate number of PET beverage bottles per pound: 16oz—18 bottles per pound 20 oz—16 bottles per pound 1 liter—12 bottles per pound 2 liter—9 bottles per pound 3 liter—5 bottles per pound *Recycling a ton of PET containers saves 7.4 cubic yards of landfill space.
