MAJOR DUTIES • Assists in the collection and transport solid waste material to assist in addressing areas of illegal and/or large item dumping in City alleys. • Assists in providing large item pick-up, brush and limb removal and other solid waste and recycling services. • Performs equipment safety inspections; performs minor equipment maintenance; notifies supervisors of maintenance or repair needs. • Constructs, delivers, maintains, repairs, and replaces roll-out containers and dumpsters. • Cleans downtown garbage cans. • Operates a truck to perform recyclable or hazardous materials collection as assigned. • Assists in maintaining recycling records. • Assists the public with uploading recycling materials from vehicles; operates forklift as needed to load material onto semi-trailers; prepares trailers for transportation of packaged recyclables. • Operates cardboard bailer and aluminum can blower. • Sorts recyclable material into appropriate bins; documents and records weight of recyclable materials. • Cleans the recycling facility, including sweeping, mopping, and other functions. ---PAGE BREAK--- Solid Waste Assistant, Solid Waste Page 2 • Performs routine and light maintenance of forklift, waste collection and recycling equipment and other solid waste related equipment. • Operates light, medium, and heavy equipment with proper supervision and training. • Provides information and assistance to the general public. • Assists in coordinating special recycling or solid waste activities, such as workshops, demonstrations, Christmas tree collection, large item pick-up and loading, or seasonal clean-ups. • Provides support to other departments and the general public on recycling and solid waste related issues. • Assists in the development of programs to promote and educate the public about solid waste, recycling, and other related resource conservation issues; makes presentations to various educational, civic, business, government, and service groups. • Performs other duties as assigned. SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Solid Waste and Recycling Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results. GUIDELINES Guidelines include traffic laws and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection and interpretation in application.
