Performs as Head Lifeguard and assumes responsibility for the facility. SUPERVISION RECEIVED Works under the general supervision of the Aquatics Supervisor. SUPERVISION EXERCISED Provides close to general supervision to provisional and seasonal Aquatics I, II and III personnel. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Leads and performs routine aquatics work in teaching swimming lessons and serving as head pool life guard. Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance; assists with a variety of swim program activities including scheduling life guard shifts, training, etc.; handles public complaints and promotes positive public relations; refers complex issues to supervisors. Monitors patron activities to assure compliance with facility policies and rules; assures safety guidelines are adhered to; reprimands patrons or ejects patrons from the facility for violations of rules. Enforces facility policies and procedures related to patron use, safety, etc.; prepares various forms, attendance records, and reports as required (i.e. accident forms, etc.) Assists to coordinate, plan, and organize aquatics programs for seniors, adults, and youth including swimming lessons, teaching Physical Education classes, water aerobics, and youth/tot programs as well as special interest classes; performs general administrative support duties assisting the Aquatics Supervisor; may participate in hiring processes and interviewing; may perform new hire orientations; participates in new hire training. Works assigned shifts; performs as a certified pool operator; monitors facility operations to assure compliance with state and federal operations and safety guidelines; assists in training of personnel; monitors facility safety practices; monitors pool water quality and chemical balances through sampling and testing; participates in daily testing to assure overall quality of pool maintenance. Monitors and performs general upkeep and custodial duties; cleans facility floors, mops, sweeps, vacuums, polishes, etc.; cleans pool decks; monitors water temperatures and chemical balances, takes water samples; may make minor equipment adjustments to assure proper temperature and chemical standards; performs cleaning of chlorinator utilizing caustic chemicals, i.e., acid, requiring use of respirator. ---PAGE BREAK--- Assists in set up and conducting of special events, i.e., swim meets; operates timing equipment; performs as public announcer. Operates personal computer and specialized software, i.e., MS publisher, Word, etc. Performs related duties as required. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS 1. Education and Experience: A. Graduation from high school or G.E.D.; AND B. Two years of experience as a certified life guard, swimming instruction, or water safety instructor; OR C. An equivalent combination of education and experience. 2. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Some knowledge of the philosophy and objectives of community recreation programming; the rules and regulations of a variety of swimming sports and recreational activities; equipment, facilities, operations and techniques used in a comprehensive community recreation program; state and federal regulations governing facility and pool operations; climate control systems; swimming pool structures; water filtration systems; chemical handling; air balancing systems; public health standards related to pool operations; basic office equipment. Ability to demonstrate maturity consistent with the established duties and responsibilities of the position; organize swim teams and activity programs, establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, youth, other organizations, and the public; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. 3. Special Qualifications: Must be certified as a Lifeguard, Water Safety Instructor, and Certified Pool Operator within 6 months of employment, unless course is not available. If course is not available, certification must be achieved with the next available date and with the authorization of the Aquatics Supervisor. Must obtain and maintain current CPR for the professional rescuer through the American Red Cross. Must obtain and maintain a valid Wyoming Driver’s license. 4. Work Environment: Incumbent of the position performs in a climate-controlled environment. Tasks require variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as swimming, walking, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, talking, hearing and seeing. Frequent communication with the public requiring the ability to talking, hear and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger, leg and foot dexterity required to perform as swimming instructor. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability and discriminating thinking. Workers are frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electric shock.
