2013 Annual Trip Challenge, Where All Trails Lead to Fitness! By Rail, Road, Rein or River It’s time to hit the trail toward fitness! The eighth annual Trip Challenge will be blazing trails to new adventures all across the United States. Choose to travel via Rail on the Transcontinental Railroad, Road on the famous Route 66, Rein on the Pony Express Trail, or by River on the Yellowstone River. Any of these methods of transportation will be a motivating way to start 2013! The trail blazing kicks off January 1st, 2013 and runs through April 30th. You’ll have four months to make your way on some of the Nation’s most famous byways. Along the way, there’ll be additional mile-earning opportunities, trivia, bonus mile days and more. WHICH TRAIL WILL YOU CHOOSE? Rail American Transcontinental Railroad Mileage: 3,560 miles (mileage is round trip; a single one-way trip is 1,780 miles) Info: The American Transcontinental Railroad was built between 1863 ~ 1869 by the Central Pacific Railroad of California and the Union Pacific Railroad. It served as a vital link between the East and West for trade, commerce and travel. GRAND PRIZE: $500 in Cody Bucks Road Route 66 Mileage: 2,448 miles Info: Route 66 has also been known as the Will Rogers Highway, Main Street American and the Mother Road. It was established in November, 1926 covering a total of 2,448 miles from Illinois to California. The Route was a major pathway for those traveling west, providing an economic boost to communities along the way. It was removed from the US Highway System in 1985 after being replaced by the Interstate Highway System; however, several segments of the original route have been designated as National Scenic Byways. GRAND PRIZE: $350 in Cody Bucks Rein Pony Express Route Mileage: 1,966 miles Info: The Pony Express route crossed the Great Plains, Rocky Mountains and High Sierras to deliver mail between St. Joseph Missouri and Sacramento, California. The establishment of the route, operated with approximately 120 riders, 184 stations and 400 horses, allowed for mail and messages to be delivered cross- country in 10 days- much faster than was previously possible by stage. The route was open from April of 1860 to October of 1861. Messages were carried by riders in a relay fashion, with fresh riders and horses stationed along the way to deliver mail quickly. The Pony Express is now a National Historic Trail with many interesting historical sites scattered along the way. GRAND PRIZE: $250 in Cody Bucks River Yellowstone River Mileage: 692 miles Info: A tributary of the Missouri River, the Yellowstone River begins where the North Fork and South Fork of the Yellowstone River converge. The river is 692 miles long, flowing northward through Yellowstone National Park, into Montana and beyond. Throughout the river’s course, it flows through many towns and is joined by the Bighorn, Tongue and Powder Rivers before joining the Missouri in Buford, North Dakota. GRAND PRIZE: $100 in Cody Bucks ---PAGE BREAK--- 2013 Updates & General Information  CHOOSING A TRAIL: Take a look at the mileage chart (you earn “miles” for every 15 minutes spent exercising, and each type of exercise has a different corresponding mileage amount), and decide how far you can go this winter. Please name the trail you are traveling on your registration form; you can not start accumulating miles until you choose your trail.  PRIZES: NEW THIS YEAR! We are lucky to live in a generous community where we get lots of local support for our programs. This year, we want to give back and keep our business in our community. We will be drawing for Cody Bucks as the grand prize for each trip! The longer the trip, the larger the amount of the grand prize. In addition to the grand prizes, we will also have fabulous door prizes from our generous local sponsors at our Trail’s End Party on Thursday, May 9, 2013 at 6:30 p.m.  SHIRTS: Everyone who registers will get a t-shirt whether or not they complete their trail, but we’re sure you’ll finish!  CALENDARS: The calendars you need for tracking your miles are included in this packet. PLEASE remember to put your name on the calendars when you turn them in. All point tallying should be done on the honor system; your signature on the calendar reflects that the calendar has been filled out honestly and accurately. PLEASE include your TOTAL POINTS with each month you turn in. All tallies are due by the 5th of the following month (i.e. January’s tally will be due no later than February 5th). Any and all late tallies will lose the second week of points, no questions asked. IF you know in advance that you will be unable to turn in your tally sheet on time, please notify Kelly Serfas Bower in advance – i.e. before the 1st of the following month- so that you do not lose points.  For each month, there are special bonus mile days (January 31 double your miles, February 14 is double miles IF you workout with a buddy, March 17th you can quadruple any miles you earned – in honor of St. Patty’s Day and the 4 leaf clover - and the weeks of March 31 – April 7 and April 21 – 27, you can add 30 miles to each week IF you worked out three or more times that week). PLEASE MAKE IT OBVIOUS TO US THAT YOU APPLIED THESE BONUSES. WE WILL NOT ADD THEM IF IT’S UNCLEAR TO US WHETHER YOU ALREADY HAVE.  BULLETIN BOARD: We’ll keep updates and new incentives, mile bonus days, etc. posted on the bulletin board just outside the childcare room on your way out of the facility. We’ll also post tally counts here on the 5th of each month.  TRIVIA: Pick up trivia sheets at the frontdesk to earn some additional miles! All completed trivia forms should be turned in to the Frontdesk with your tallies. You can fill out trivia sheets for ANY trail, not just yours ~ it’s a great way to learn about our different routes as well as get some extra miles along the way!  TRAIL BLAZER PARTY!! Mark your calendars now for the Trail’s End party where we’ll hand out t- shirts and draw for our grand prize winners as well as tons of great door prizes from generous local sponsors. High impact classes include cycling classes, DRILL Boot Camp, HIIT, Lunch box variety, Kick Boxing, Step aerobics, Zumba, CrossFit, P90x, Insanity, etc., Aqua Aerobics, Aqua Boot Camp and Deep Water Workout.
