The End of Winter: For most of us this past winter was too long and too harsh. For the Scipio Highway crew it meant many sleepless nights driving in often dangerous, white-out conditions night (and day) after night. Scipio Town residents owe a big vote of appreciation for the commitment and effort of the highway crew for their work this past winter. They did a great job in difficult circumstances. Clarity Connect: Many town residents have inquired about broadband availability within Scipio. The process with the Connect NY Broadband Grant began mid 2012 and many of us are anxious to access internet through Clarity Connect. Progress is being made in establishing the infrastructure for the nine towns (Ulysses, Newfield, Danby, Groton, Lansing, Genoa, Venice, Scipio and Niles) within this grant project. Through June 2015 “towers” are being constructed. After that time activation will occur in sequence over the rest of 2015. The places with the greatest customer demand will be activated first. According to a Clarity Connect administrator, you should be contacted if you have pre-signed up for service. You may want to check with Clarity Connect. Questions can be sent to [EMAIL REDACTED] Clarity Connect website is www.clarityconnect.com From Highway Superintendent Mark Chamberlain: After a long winter we have a lot of work to do on the roads and ditches. Anyone in need of ditch dirt can call the town office and leave your name, number, and location, and I will get back to you. We are also looking for part time wing people for the winter months. Must be willing to work all hours of the day, nights, weekends, holidays, etc. You can call the office at 364-7754 and leave a message and I will get back to you. Grievance Day is Thursday June 4 from 4-8 pm. Town Clerk Position: The town clerk, an elected position, is required by New York State law to be a resident of the town. Deb Kellogg began as Scipio town clerk as of January 1, 2014. As she changed residence April 2015 she resigned from her position as town clerk. The Town Board has appointed Tom Olenych as town clerk to complete the term from May through December 31, 2015. From Deb Kellogg: Scipio Residents. It has been so much fun getting to know a lot of you. Unfortunately, by the time you read this I will no longer be a Scipio resident. I will be selling my home and moving to a nearby town. Since that is the case I can no longer serve as your Town Clerk. I will still be the Court Clerk so still a part of the community. It was an honor to serve you and an experience I will never forget. Thank you for your support. Deb Welcome Town Clerk Tom Olenych: Tom and his wife Karen have been residents of Scipio for over 26 years, and Tom has served on the Town Planning Board for 24 years, the Town Board of Assessment Review for 23 years, and is currently Chair. He also is Chair of Scipio’s Zoning Commission. Happy Spring from the Scipio Fire Department! We have a busy spring at the fire department and we invite you to come take part. RecruitNY is April 25th. Starting at 10am we will be hosting an open house. It is a great opportunity to come out and support the fire service and engage in your community. At the breakfast there will be a raffle for a beautiful quilt and we will have gorgeous forever wooden roses for sale for $5 per dozen. Remember to stay safe and in the event of an emergency call 911. Keep up to date with all the news and events at the Scipio Fire Department by liking our page on Facebook! We hope you all have a safe and warm spring! From a Scipio Resident: Ran across this piece of 1880 advice for coping with winter quoted in the recent Genoa Tribune – “Keep your feet warm, your head cool, and your mouth shut.” I am not so good at the last one! I like the 4 seasons, but especially this year would prefer more spring/summer/fall and less winter. Thank you Mark Chamberlain and Highway Guys for clearing our paths. Thank you friends and neighbors for helping each other. Regular Town Board meetings are held at the Town Office on the 2nd Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm. All visitors are invited to attend. If you have an item to bring to the board, you may contact the Town Supervisor or Clerk so that it may be placed on the agenda.
