The used oil from a sin- gle oil change can literally contami- nate a million gallons of fresh water. Oil should never be dumped on the ground, put in the trash, or poured in the sewer or down the drain. Your best disposal options is to recycle used oil. Motor Oil Recycling For the “Do-It-Yourselfer” Used Oil Filters Used oil filters need to be handled with care. A used oil filter from a pas- senger car can contain a pint to a quart of oil. And even if a filter is drained overnight, it will still contain 2 to 8 ounces of used oil. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency required used oil filters to be drained before they are discarded or recycled, in the interest of protecting the environment and your local community. Here's how to drain the most oil from your used filter: 1. Remove the filter from the engine while the engine is still warm. (Use extreme caution when hot-draining filters to avoid burns. Wear protective equip- ment such as safety glasses and gloves.) 2. Puncture the dome end of the filter. 3. Turn the filter upside down so it can drain completely into your container for used oil recycling. 4. Allow the filter to drain overnight (or a minimum of 12 hours). Oil should be drained when the air temperature is 60o F or higher. 5. After hot-draining the filter, place it in a sealable plastic bag, coffee can with lid or other leakproof container. 6. Dispose of filter in the garbage.
