Census Bureau NP01 Population and Housing Narrative Profile: 2010-2012 2010-2012 American Community Survey 3-Year Estimates Although the American Community Survey (ACS) produces population, demographic and housing unit estimates, it is the Census Bureau's Population Estimates Program that produces and disseminates the official estimates of the population for the nation, states, counties, cities and towns and estimates of housing units for states and counties. Households and Families In 2010-2012 there were 41,000 households in Cape May County, New Jersey. The average household size was 2.3 people. Families made up 65 percent of the households in Cape May County, New Jersey. This figure includes both married-couple families (51 percent) and other families (14 percent). Of other families, 5 percent are female householder families with no husband present and own children under 18 years. Nonfamily households made up 35 percent of all households in Cape May County, New Jersey. Most of the nonfamily households were people living alone, but some were composed of people living in households in which no one was related to the householder. In Cape May County, New Jersey, 25 percent of all households have one or more people under the age of 18; 37 percent of all households have one or more people 65 years and over. Of those grandparents, 39 percent of them had financial responsibility for their grandchildren. Nativity and Foreign Born Ninety-five percent of the people living in Cape May County, New Jersey in 2010-2012 were native residents of the United States. Forty-seven percent of these residents were living in the state in which they were born. Six percent of the people living in Cape May County, New Jersey in 2010-2012 were foreign born. Of the foreign born population, 42 percent were naturalized U.S. citizens, and 89 percent entered the country before the year 2010. For those under 18 years of age, 6 percent had no health insurance coverage. The civilian noninstitutionalized population had both private and public health insurance, with 72 percent having private coverage and 36 percent having public coverage. Population In 2010-2012, Cape May County, New Jersey had a total population of 97,000 - 50,000 (52 percent) females and 47,000 (49 percent) males. The median age was 47.9 years.
