Thornton Cape May County Emergency Management Coordinator Martin Pagliughi www.capemaycountyemergency.net ---PAGE BREAK--- October, 2012: Hurricane Sandy takes a turn and comes ashore in New Jersey and changed emergency management planning and notification forever in the Garden State. Sandy was truly a game-changing storm. ---PAGE BREAK--- A devastating storm like Sandy could not happen here? It almost did. If Hurricane Sandy’s left turn occurred 40 miles to the South, it would have been a much different story for us. ---PAGE BREAK--- 18 months have passed since Hurricane Sandy impacted the State of New Jersey and Cape May County. What has the Cape May County Office of Emergency Management done since the storm arrived? ---PAGE BREAK--- Since Hurricane Sandy, the County has acquired 22 high wheel United States Army surplus vehicles to serve our municipalities during emergencies and storm events. ---PAGE BREAK--- Cape May County has formed its own County Animal Response Team (CART) to address the needs of pet owners, and pets, during an evacuation. Important points to consider: 1. Red Cross shelters do not accept pets 2. Pet owners will not evacuate unless their pets are out of harm’s way 3. Cape May County has volunteers who will assist pet owners with caring for their pets during an evacuation. 4. The CART Team meets to discuss challenges facing pet evacuations. ---PAGE BREAK--- Current resource available from the Borough of Avalon Avalon’s Emergency Evacuation Pet Shelter includes installed pet cages, climate control, veterinary work station, running water, lighting. Available to any community in the state who needs to safely evacuate pets during an emergency situation.
