Independence Day is upon us, and so are celebrations that include fireworks. The Butte-Silver Bow Health Department is encouraging a common-sense approach to firework safety to prevent injury and death. From 2010 to 2012, Montana had 127 fireworks injuries – that includes hospitalizations and ER visits. Fifty-five percent of those injuries were to adults, while 45 percent were to children ages 17 and under. Two-thirds of those injuries were to males – adults had more injuries to the fingers, hands and wrist, while kids sustained more burn injuries. Most people don’t realize how destructive fireworks can be. Water boils at 212 degrees and glass melts at 900 degrees. A 4th of July sparkler burns at 1,200 degrees! Independence Day celebrants can take several precautions to keep themselves and their children safe. 1. Always have adult supervision and make sure the area you’re recreating in is safe for fireworks. Keep a hose with an adequate water supply nearby, and always soak fireworks in water before disposing. 2. Light only one firework at a time, and do not attempt to re-light a firework. Fireworks should never be shot from metal or glass containers. 3. Know that alcohol and fireworks don’t mix. Designate an adult to remain alcohol-free. 4. Never throw or point fireworks at another person. And never have any portion of your body over a firework while lighting. 5. Don’t put fireworks in your pockets, and closely follow instructions accompanying fireworks. 6. Keep your pets indoors. Have a wonderful and safe 4th!
