City-County of Butte-Silver Bow COMPREHENSIVE PARK, TRAILS AND OPEN SPACE PLAN Project Update July 29, 2008 Project Highlights Community Workshop March 10th Over 130 participants Major Themes: • Find and secure appropriate funding • Focus on improving and maintaining existing parks • Provide facilities for all ages • Trail connections Stakeholder Interviews/Focus Groups January 17-18, March 10-11 Approximately 20 representatives of various groups interested in: • Aquatics • Tennis • Golf • Schools • Users Findings: • There is strong interest in additional facilities, both indoor and outdoor • No clear path from idea to implementation • Make the best use of any existing facilities and potential partners • There is additional need for activities and opportunities for youth Park and Facility Analysis • Breakdown of over 275 acres of land into 4 developed park categories to more clearly define use and needs • Thousands of additional acres in natural areas and undeveloped mine and superfund lands • Updated inventory of recreation facilities both indoor and outdoor • Profile of existing aquatic facilities Community Needs Assessment Identified Needs: • Develop/Redevelop park sites to provide convenient access to neighborhood parks • More mini park sites in Uptown than are needed for park access • Prepare for addition of many acres of superfund, mine lands • New recreation opportunities • Outdoor aquatics facilities ---PAGE BREAK--- • Additional indoor recreation Other Findings • Adequate number of sports fields • Upgrades and ongoing maintenance needs for sports facilities • Strong interest in parks and recreation • Existing indoor pools can meet most aquatics needs Aquatics Options Presentation • Case studies of existing aquatics facilities • Presents a range of options for meeting additional aquatics needs • Details the differences in both capital and operating costs for each option Next Steps • Refine key community priorities into a vision and goals for the park system • Develop draft recommendations: o Park projects o Trail Projects o Park and Recreation Department Structure o Maintenance and Operations Funding • Implementation Plan • Adoption Process
