Wash Smart for your Charity Don’t pollute the Skagit River Car wash water contains: •Oils •Heavy metals •Toxic organic chemicals If this water can flow to the sanitary sewer (drains located inside buildings) or soak into the ground it gets some treatment •Metals are retained in the solids •Oils and toxic organic chemicals are broken down by bacteria Car wash water that flows down the street or to outside drains flows untreated to Gages Slough and the Skagit River OR: Use the City of Burlington Car Wash Kit (755-9715) You must prepare ahead of time to assure that: You will be able to block the storm drain in the wash location with the insert in the kit. Test the insert to make sure it is a tight fit in the drain. You have building access so wash water can be pumped to an inside sink or toilet drain OR Wash water can be pumped to a level vegetated area where it can absorb into the ground. To prevent pollution, do your homework BEFORE your charity car wash!
