Submitting Work to the Burlington Public Library Local authors and publishers Thank you for your interest in adding your work to the Burlington Public Library collection. BPL is very interested in acquiring materials that are written and/or published locally. We are especially interested in materials about Skagit County, Western Washington, and the Pacific Northwest. It is sometimes difficult for us to identify these materials, so we appreciate an author or artist bringing them to our attention. In selecting materials for the library, library staff are guided by our Collection Development Policy. This policy can be viewed on our website: burlingtonwa.gov/library. As a small public library, we select materials for general users, rather than specialists or practitioners. We collect materials for all ages. We rarely add self-published materials to our collection because they often lack professional reviews, or it can be difficult to verify the content of the work. In making a decision about adding material to our collection, we consider the Following: 1. Timeliness 2. Authority and competence of the author to write on the subject matter 3. Significance of subject 4. Responsibility of opinion (and appropriate use of copyrighted material included in the work) 5. Accuracy 6. Importance in comparison with other works on the subject 7. Special local interest / author’s connection to the community we serve 8. Availability of evaluations in professional review guides 9. Books which are high in demand, but which do not meet specified criteria 10. Suitability of the format of the material for Library purposes (for example, some bindings are not suitable for circulation in a public library setting) 11.
