Lineman/Electrical Apprentice City of Burley October 2023 Lineman/Electrical Apprentice Groundman Department: Electric Reports to: Electrical Foreman Pay Grade 17 Date: October 2023 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Salary Range $19.15 - $28.73 JOB DESCRIPTION Summary/Objective Under direction general supervision, to perform a variety of advanced apprentice level, technical duties related to performing and effecting power system installation, distribution, transmission and maintenance. Performs line maintenance work and new construction, including pole climbing and live work as per approved safety procedures. Essential Functions: ▪ Installing distribution lines between individual buildings or homes. ▪ Reading and interpreting electrical wiring diagrams. ▪ Digging trenches or climbing poles to repair or maintain underground and overhead electrical cables. ▪ Install conduit in open trenches for distribution and secondary. ▪ Assist a journeyman electrician and follow instructions. ▪ Prepare and clean work areas. ▪ Carry and deliver materials. ▪ Install, repair, and maintain various electrical wiring systems and equipment. ▪ Use measuring equipment and hand tools to perform conduit work. ▪ Follow safety codes and building regulations. ▪ Communicate effectively. ▪ Physical demands, see physical demands of job description. General Duties: 1. Assist the City workers in the various aspects of line maintenance, repair and construction. 2. Prepare and assemble various streetlights, electrical panels, and electrical terminations. Work with electrical apparatus and tools required for particular work being performed. 3. Drive and operate various equipment and vehicles. Experience must include backing large equipment into tight spaces. 4. Keep work areas clean and organized. Pickup scrap wire, boxes, and other discarded materials. 5. Communicate with power plant dispatch regarding opening/closing and tagging/un-tagging of circuits while work is being performed. 6. Will be assigned various meter reading routes. 7. Keep unauthorized people away from work area. 8. Stock trucks with material commonly used on a daily basis. 9. Assist with cleaning warehouse and storage yard area. 10. Assist with washing and maintaining equipment in proper working order. 11. Use of various hand and power tools. 12. Assist with loading of various materials onto truck and/or trailers. Overhead Duties: 1. Employees will be in close proximity to work area in case of emergency. Ie. Must be able to operate lower controls online truck. 2. Must verify proper grounding of line truck. 3. May be required to assist lineman in second bucket while working on lines. 4. Assemble conduit and place in trench. 2. Assist with installation of various underground apparatuses. 3. Assist with pulling wire. 4. Must be knowledgeable with the materials needed and process to strip and terminate underground cables. Competencies: 1. Problem Solving/Analysis. 2. Communication Proficiency. 3. Mechanical skills. 4. Technical skills. 5. Customer/Client Focus. Supervisory Responsibility This positon has no direct supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment This position primarily works outdoors, in all types of weather, and in potentially hazardous environments. Physical Demands The physical demand described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Requires the ability to exert a considerable amount of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects and to stoop, crouch, work prone to reach work, climb and lift in the performance of manual labor; to operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles; to work around electrical equipment in a safe manner. Tasks require color and visual perception and discrimination, as well as oral communications ability. Ability to work from ladders and at heights up to 100 feet. Ability to work with small components. Ability to lift loads 50+ pounds. Position Type/ Expect Hours of Work This is a full-time position. The days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM and 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Frequent evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Ability to respond to after-hours outages, emergencies or other situations within twenty (20) minutes. Travel Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. Required Education and Experience Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Must have an Idaho CDL Driver’s license within six months of employment and have a satisfactory driving record. Must demonstrate safe work practices. Preferred Education and Experience Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Learn the operating principles, methods and materials, and skillful performance of troubleshooting, diagnosing, testing, repairing, performing preventive maintenance, modifying of electrical and high voltage electrical systems. Completion of electrician ---PAGE BREAK--- Lineman/Electrical Apprentice City of Burley October 2023 training program. Knowledge of NESC electrical codes. Eagerness to learn electrical schematics and blueprint reading skills. Additional Eligibility Qualifications Must maintain insurability under the City’s vehicle operator’s insurance policy. Experience in the repair of electrical equipment and experience in public relations.
