Fleet Equipment Welder/Vehicle Maintenance City of Burley 2018 Fleet Equipment Vehicle and Maintenance/ Welder Department: Shop Reports to: Fleet Equipment Manager Pay Grade 22 Date: October 2018 FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Salary Range JOB DESCRIPTION Summary/Objective Under direction general supervision, to perform preventive maintenance, skilled repairs, and outfitting of a wide variety of City vehicles and light to heavy duty trucks and equipment; and to perform related work as assigned. Equipment Mechanic I is the entry level of the mechanic series. The incumbent performs simpler repairs and preventive maintenance, and learn to perform more complex and difficult repair and maintenance. This class is flexibly staffed with Equipment Mechanic II, and incumbents normally advance to the higher level after gaining experience and achieving proficiency which meet the requirements for Equipment Mechanic II. Essential Functions:  Road tests, inspects and troubleshoots automotive, and light and heavy duty trucks and equipment to assess their condition and determine needed repairs and discusses equipment problems with supervisor  Fabricates special parts and outfits new equipment for City service;  Lays out, develops designs for, assembles, fits, cuts, and welds various metals as required for fabrication, modification or maintenance of equipment, fixtures, pipe, fittings, and metal structures requiring close tolerances.  Fabricates equipment, tools, structures, pipe and other metal products; forges and solders metal using the full array of welding techniques, including oxygen/acetylene and arc welding such as flux core, gas metal, gas tungsten, shielded metal and plasma.  Performs limited body and frame repair; paints vehicles and fabricated parts on occasions.  Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work; on work being performed and not shop supplies when the supervisors is unavailable.  Repairs and maintains hand held, small engine and walk behind power equipment;  Reading and interpreting repair manuals and schematic diagrams.  Performing basic maintenance and repairs on electric equipment.  Keep accurate records and reports of work performed, time and materials used by job;  Performs on-site field Services to stationery or disabled equipment;  Service other specialized apparatus and equipment such as fire pumping apparatus.  Able to diagnose computer control systems using scan tools and laptops analyzers.  Remove and replace tires from vehicles and from rims when needed.  Federal regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices relating to use of light, medium and heavy equipment, power tools and hand tools; State, local and other applicable vehicle safety codes and regulations;  Performs routine maintenance work on department vehicles and equipment. Repairs carts, containers, and roll-off boxes, including welding, painting and refurbishing and cleaning.  Services trucks by checking fuel and fluid levels, changing oil and hydraulic fluids, checking tire pressure, rotating and changing tires, checking lug nuts and general mechanical condition.  Greases and washes trucks. Collects mileage and hour of operation data off trucks.  Assists mechanic in performing maintenance and repair on department equipment and vehicles in department repair shops and on job sites as needed.  Understand and follow oral and written instructions.  Communicates respectfully and effectively  Physical demands, see physical demands of job description. ---PAGE BREAK--- Fleet Equipment Welder/Vehicle Maintenance City of Burley 2018 Competencies: 1. ASE maintenance certified. Supervisory Responsibility This positon has no direct supervisory responsibilities. Work Environment While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of extreme conditions. The noise level in the work environment and job sites can be loud. Physical Demands The physical demand described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. This position is very active and requires standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, crawling, and climbing all day. The employee must frequently lift and/or move items over 50 pounds. Must be able to work in tight or confined conditions. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Position Type/ Expect Hours of Work This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, 40 hours per week. Frequent evening and weekend work may be required as job duties demand. Travel Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some out-of-area and overnight travel may be expected. Required Education and Experience Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Must have an Idaho CDL Driver’s license within six months of employment and have a satisfactory driving record. Must have knowledge of tools and equipment used in basic servicing and repair of automotive equipment. Use, adjustment, and care of basic hand and power tools common to the trade. Must demonstrate safe work practices. Must possess at least one ASE certificate within the six months of employment. Preferred Education and Experience Equivalent to a High School Diploma. Two years of experience comparable to the Equipment Service Attendant classification at the City, and sufficient coursework or training to demonstrate attainment of the required knowledge and skills. ASE certified masters is preferred. Experience in the repair of electrical equipment and experience in public relations.
