City of Blackfoot Open Seats Councilmembers Seat 3 – Four year term Seat 4 – Four year term $6,000.00 per year with retirement and health benefits. The council’s primary duties are legislative. This legislative authority includes passing ordinances and resolutions, confirming appointments, and generally serving as the policy making body of the city. The council is composed of four members with staggered terms so that half of the council is elected at each city election. Each councilmember is elected to a four year term, unless the council position was appointed. The only qualifications necessary for holding a position on the city council is to be a qualified elector of the city. Duties and Responsibilities: The council has the power to call a special meeting with the consent of the majority of its members. The council confirms all mayoral appointments. The council may adopt, revise, codify, or compile all ordinances, rules and regulations necessary to implement the powers and duties conferred by state law, and to maintain the welfare of the city. A majority of the full council has the power to override a mayoral veto. The council is required to examine the financial accounts of the city and is responsible for passing the annual appropriation ordinance. Council meetings are held the 1st Tuesday of every month at 7:00 p.m. in the Blackfoot City Council Chambers. Other meetings are scheduled as needed.
