Community Library Committee Meeting Minutes April 17, 2008 College of Technology Present: John Cech, Bill Cochran, Jane Howell, Rita Kratky, Lloyd Mickelson, Suzanne Reymer Not present: Valerie Martinez, Eakle Barfield, Peggie Gaghen, Bruce McCandless, Brent Roberts Guests: Dan Carter, Denise DuPont, Tony Hines, Paulette Laszlo, Shari Nault Pullar, Jean Warner, Jim Peters, Dee Ann Redman, Sandy Raymond 1. The meeting was called to order at 12:05 pm following a Parmly Billings Library Board meeting 2. The minutes from the March 20, 2008 meeting were approved as amended. 3. City Update (Bill Cochran) – No significant updates from city. 4. University Update (John Cech) Project data description document presented with explanation from Dan Carter. This is for inclusion in Governor’s budget. Gives university the authority to go ahead with planning, fundraising, etc. The university’s side of planning and documentation are on page 1. The whys of the project are on pages 2 to 3. Bill Cochran added that the estimated costs are close to the original estimates from 2004. John Cech added that Montana has applied for a Lumina grant to seek funding for comprehensive planning for 2 year education in the state. This may provide up to $500 K for 2 years. 5. Subcommittee Reports Facilities - Community Library Planning Study document presented. Eakle is looking for additional comments and suggestions. City and university representatives need to work out who signs and pays for implementation and that city/university procurement processes are followed. Discussions/suggestions – LEED certification, workshop on promotion/fundraising with June Garcia or alternate speaker(s), campaign manager candidates, possibility of simultaneous library development at both downtown and west end sites. Funding – has not met. This committee will look at candidates for campaign ---PAGE BREAK--- manager. Planning – met Monday. Minutes handed out. Bill attended PLA (Public Library Association) program on “Joint Use Facilities: Find Out What You Should Know Before One is Proposed in Your Community.” Handout provided. Some useful lessons on what not to do. Looking at site visit alternatives to Front Range for May and June. Policies – has not met. 6.
