TO: PARMLY BILLINGS LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM: BILL COCHRAN, DIRECTOR RE: REPORT MEETING DATE: DECEMBER 11, 2008 ACTIVITIES REPORT Children’s Services Assistant Ellis attended an 11-7 What’s New in Children’s Literature. I participated in the 11-18 Foundation Board meeting. I joined Children’s Librarian Cindy Patterson and Library Development Services Director Leslie Modrow in an 11-19 meeting with representatives of Venture Theatre to explore future coordination of promotion and activities related to children’s literature. I joined a number of Library Board members for an 11-19 tour of Gainan’s, led by Chuck Gainan, to provide background in the event that the building would ever be available as a possible site for a downtown library. I Co-Chaired the 11-19 meeting of the Project Homeless Connect Committee. Children’s Services Assistant Elizabeth Fellerer and I gave a presentation on Children’s and Teen Service to an 11-20 meeting of BOOST, an organization of agencies that provide safe and educational opportunities during out of school hours. I joined several Library staff, Board members and Foundation Board members and donors for an 11-20 Foundation 20th Anniversary Donor Recognition reception. I attended an 11-20 public input meeting on the proposed Master Plan for Sahara Park in the Heights and spoke about its possible relationship to a future Heights Library branch. Children’s Services staff attended 12-2/4 orientations at Head Start. I joined Board member Lloyd Mickelson and others in interviewing six architect/consulting teams 12-2 for the preliminary planning project for the Community Library Project at the MSU-Billings COT. I served on an interview panel for the Court Administrator for Billings Municipal Court on 12-3. I attended the 12-3 City CIP public input meeting at Castle Rock Middle School and the 12-4 meeting at Will James Middle School. Senior Administrative Coordinator Sandy Raymond and I led a 12-4 Lunch @ the Library tour for guests of the Foundation. UPCOMING EVENTS 12-11 Library Board meeting, Noon 12-12 Celebration of Holiday Songs, Big Sky Chorus, 11:00 a.m. 12-17 Turning Page Book Club, 7:00 p.m. 1-6 Learning at the Library, Beginning Mouse, 11:30 a.m. 1-6 Spanish Conversation Group, 5:30 a.m. 1-8 Library Board meeting, Noon 1-8 Lars and the Real Girl, Independent Film, 7:00 p.m. 1-13 Learning at the Library, Beginning Microsoft Word, 11:30 a.m. 1-15 Eating Healthy on a Budget, Noon ---PAGE BREAK--- 1-21 American Visions Book Discussion Group, 7:00 p.m. 1-22 Off the Map, Independent Film 7:00 p.m. STRATEGIC PLAN STATUS REPORT Completed • Objective 5.1 Public classes on Internet and electronic resources; new schedule of public software classes being offered starting in October In Progress • Objective 1.1 Joint Community Library; Architect Selection Committee met 12-2 and recommended top candidates to State of Montana Department of Administration; Memorandum of Agreement between City and MSU-Billings approved at City Council meeting 9-22; Community Library Committee met 7-17, 9-25, 10-16, and 11-20 • Objective 1.2 Facility Committee recommendations; Facilities Committee met with Funding Committee 8-22; second joint meeting scheduled for 12-8 • Objective 1.6 Systematic roving assistance program; draft checklist developed at 9-12 Staff meeting • Objective 2.1 Community issue oriented programming; hosted Humanities Montana program Characteristics of the Modern U.S. Presidency 9-26; working with Library Foundation and Humanities Montana to sponsor Can We Talk: A Community Conversation 1-30-09 • Objective 4.2/8.2 Marketing program for the online program suggestion function; draft plan developed 8-19 • Objective 5.2 Workstation modified for persons with disabilities; computer, software, peripherals, and furniture ordered by 11-21 • Objective 6.1 Staff information literacy training; all staff started training, beginning 9-5, using Learning to Learn: A Guide to Becoming Information Literate in the 21st Century • Objective 6.3 Links from Library website to recommended Internet resources; Election 2008 pages went active 10-2 • Objective 7.1 Lifelong learning programs; new lifelong learning book club kits being introduced with facilitated book discussion groups, including Will of the People 9-24; Judging the Lawyers 10-30; and Freakonomics 11-25 • Objective 8.3 Program for newborns and parents; Children’s Services, the Friends of the Library, and the Junior Woman’s Club have collaboratively designed and produced materials to be delivered to all newborns at both hospitals beginning in November, when Children’s Services will also begin a Friday morning newborn and parent program.
