TO: PARMLY BILLINGS LIBRARY BOARD OF TRUSTEES FROM: BILL COCHRAN, DIRECTOR RE: REPORT MEETING DATE: OCTOBER 9, 2008 ACTIVITIES REPORT Systems Administrator Dee Ann Redman met with the City’s Network Manager and consultants on 9/16 regarding developing plans to upgrade the Library’s network. Children’s Services staff spoke to two children’s literature classes 9-17/18 at MSU-Billings. Senior Administrative Coordinator Sandy Raymond and I attended the Personnel Management III class 9-18 in the City Supervisory Training Series. I participated in the 9-18 Mayor’s Committee on Homelessness meeting and Co-Chaired the 9-24 meeting of the Project Homeless Connect Planning Committee. Sandy Raymond, Children’s Librarian Cindy Patterson, and Technical Services Assistant Amy Fugate, attended the Montana State Library Fall Workshop 9-19/20 in Livingston. I joined Sandy Raymond, Trustees Dan Carter and Shari Nault, and others at the 9-22 meeting of the Board’s Funding Committee. I joined Trustee Lloyd Mickelson and MSU-B Facilities Manager Eakle Barfield at the 9-22 City Council meeting, at which the Memorandum of Agreement for preliminary planning of the Community Library project on the MSU-Billings College of Technology was approved. I participated in the 9-23 Library Foundation Board Annual Retreat. Children’s Services staff attended the 9-23 meeting of the Midland Empire Reading Council. I joined Trustees Lloyd Mickelson and Shari Nault and Dee Ann Redman at the 9-24 High Plains Book Awards Committee meeting. Trustees Tony Hines, Mickelson, Nault and Redman also participated in the 10-1 Committee meeting. I participated in the 9-24 Will of the People Book Discussion Group, the first in a series introducing new book club kits to support lifelong learning. I Chaired the 9-25 Community Library Committee meeting at the MSU-Billings Library. I joined Sandy Raymond and Foundation Development Director Leslie Modrow in assisting with the 9-26 Humanities Montana program, Characteristics of the Modern U.S. Presidency, by MSU- Bozeman Professor Joan Hoff, and the reception following. Sandy Raymond and Dee Ann Redman attended a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored workshop on Conflict Resolution on 10-3. I attended the 10-3 Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting. ---PAGE BREAK--- STRATEGIC PLAN STATUS REPORT Completed In Progress • Objective 1.1 Joint Community Library; Memorandum of Agreement between City and MSU- Billings approved at City Council meeting 9-22; Community Library Committee met 7-17, 9-25 • Objective 1.2 Facility Committee recommendations; Facilities Committee met with Funding Committee 8-22 • Objective 1.6 Systematic roving assistance program; draft checklist developed at 9-12 Staff meeting • Objective 2.1 Community issue oriented programming; hosted Humanities Montana program Characteristics of the Modern U.S. Presidency 9-26 • Objective 4.2/8.2 Marketing program for the online program suggestion function; draft plan developed 8-19 • Objective 5.1 Public classes on Internet and electronic resources; new schedule of public software classes being offered starting in October • Objective 6.1 Staff information literacy training; all staff started training, beginning 9-5, using Learning to Learn: A Guide to Becoming Information Literate in the 21st Century • Objective 6.3 Links from Library website to recommended Internet resources; Election 2008 pages went active 10-2 • Objective 7.1 Lifelong learning programs; new lifelong learning book club kits being introduced with facilitated book discussion groups, beginning with Will of the People 9-24 • Objective 8.3 Program for newborns and parents; Children’s Services, the Friends of the Library, and the Junior Woman’s Club have collaboratively designed and produced materials to be delivered to all newborns at both hospitals beginning in November, when Children’s Services will also begin a Friday morning newborn and parent program.
