TO: PARMLY BILLINGS LIBRARY BOARD FROM: BILL COCHRAN, LIBRARY DIRECTOR JIM PETERS, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR RE: STATEMENT OF CONCERN ABOUT WONDERLAND: KING OF SPADES MEETING DATE: JULY 21, 2009 Attached is a “Statement of Concern About Library Resources” submitted by Delilah Brown. STATEMENT REQUEST Ms. Brown states that she read the “first chapter” and that the book was given to her by a patron. She says that “this book seems to cross a line from erotica to pornography.” The action she seeks is that it “not be showcased as new, 14 day.” BACKGROUND Wonderland: King of Spades is one of a series of erotic novels that traces the adventures of attorney Alexi O’Brien, who is taken from her home in San Francisco to a “beautiful and highly sexual world” to find her missing twin sister. Though staff has been unable to locate reviews from recognized reviewing sources there are a number of reader reviews on Amazon.com which comment favorably on the book’s fantasy element and on the erotic nature of the plot and the characters. The Library has 2 copies of this book that were ordered because of a patron request. The 2 copies have circulated 7 times since April 2009, demonstrating that it is a popular title. STAFF RECOMMENDATION The book is currently located on the new fiction display shelves on the first floor, an area where newly acquired fiction materials, which are intended to be current publications, are displayed for a period of one year, then removed to the fiction collection on the second floor. The book in question is a recent acquisition, but was published in 2003 and is not a new publication. Staff recommends that both copies of this book be relocated in the fiction collection on the second floor because they are not new.
