I had a hard time sitting down to work on the August newsletter! AUGUST—can you believe it! It feels like last week we were singing Deck the Halls and with the way time is racing by, we will be singing it again next week! It all makes my head spin! It feels to me that we should hardly be passed March!!!!! Well, enough whining—AUGUST! Dusty, dry, hot August— I am not ashamed nor afraid to admit that you are not my favorite month however, I can concede that you do have some admirable qualities. Apples are beginning to prepare for their grand appearances, the long -awaited garden produce that takes patience and perseverance is mostly ready, and to quote a great old musical— “The corn is as high as an elephants’ eye”! So, as we wipe the sweat off our brow and change the sprinkler, we know summer isn’t going to be around much longer so we will put on a brave face and endure the hot for a little longer. We would love to hear how you spent your sunny season days! Come have lunch with us and tell us of your summer lore! Call by 10:00 on the day you would like to dine with us! Willy Wonka is the mastermind behind some of the most delicious and innovative chocolate creations the world has ever seen. But before shaking up the chocolate industry and making a name for him- self as a confectionery genius, the ambitious young creator had to defy all odds. As a result, Willy transformed his wildest dreams into reality with a bold vision, determination, and unexpected help from new friends. After all, hard work and a dash of magic can make anything happen. Because, as Willy already knows, it only takes a dream to make a difference. August Birthday Lunch August 21, 2024 @ 12:00 When you do something beautiful and nobody noticed, do not be sad for the sun every morning is a beautiful spectacle, yet most of the audience still sleeps. John Lennon ---PAGE BREAK--- Daneen Trivia The Senior Center is a special place and I look forward to being here every day! One of my favorite reasons is that I get to spend the day with this precious person! Daneen Lytle (AKA Deener). You will see her in the kitchen assisting Dave, out working in the gardens or answering the phone. You already know she is friendly, helpful and compassionate but here’s a few things I’m pretty sure you don’t know about her! So here are some trivia tidbits about Deener! What is your… Favorite Flower? Sunflower Favorite Color? Butterscotch Yellow Favorite Candy? Dark Chocolate (Yes, you are welcome to bring her some!) Deener played softball when she was young and she won a Valentine's Day Bowl- ing tournament when she was 9, competing against kids as old as 18. She was chased and almost caught by a bull and then got a spanking from her grandma for being in the bull pen in the first place. She has also been chased by a goose and kicked by a turkey. Deener worked at the Bar Café and managed National Car rental for several years at the airport. Her claim to fame is that she rented a car to Michael Keaton and of- fended Peter Fonda by not having the kind of car he was looking for. The airport was so small at that time that Alice DeHaan, security AND janitor would wait for Daneen to get to her car when she finished work at night to turn off the one streetlight in the parking lot! When Deener started working here, she had no idea that she would re-connect with so many of her family members who she lost track of over the years. There are just so many amazing things about Deener and this just scratches the surface. She loves Jesus with all her heart, and she just celebrated 39 years with her husband, Steve. She has two sons, two daughters-in- law and ten grandchildren! One of those grandchildren is a big part of the Center! Malachi volunteers for us often and does a great job working in the kitchen! Stop in and have a chat with Deener—You’ll be glad you did! And don’t forget the dark chocolate! ---PAGE BREAK--- Right in the Thick of Grilling Season (Quotes from actual reviews of BBQ’s and Smokers) Although grilling a delicious steak can be accomplished almost any time of year, we are currently in the middle of grilling season. Grilling has become a hobby and con- versations surrounding all the new-fangled bells and whistles found in BBQ grills and smokers reminds me of guys standing around comparing their cars. “I just got me the Blaze Professional LUX Outdoor Kitchen Grill. It isn’t just about the looks and feel. It provides incredible burner quality, guaranteed ignition, and fine-tuned temperature control.” “Well, I went with the Napoleon Prestige PRO 500! From its impressive construction and war- ranty to strong performance and comprehensive features, it’s designed with all the right things in mind.” “The Old Country BBQ Pits Brazos Loaded Offset Charcoal Smoker is the only way to go! The 40-inch main chamber provides an extra-large cooking area and this here charcoal firebox features a cooking grate for grilling directly over the coals. It even includes counterweight, ash remover, and tuning plate! You get the idea—Grills today are “brag worthy” which is a far cry from the little three-legged gizmo that teetered precariously on the end of the picnic table and threatened to dump hot coals everywhere when- ever you flipped a burger! But I must admit that I have eaten some mighty fine vittles off my son-in-law’s Traeger Timberwood 850 with Wi-Fi, internal temperature probe, phone app controls, and my personal favorite feature - Concealed Grease Management. 1.
