Some people won’t even allow their number of years to pass through their lips. Some are deeply offended when asked their age while others shrug it off as no big deal. Personally, I don’t care! Dave’s life motto is “Getting older is mandatory; growing up is optional”. So, just because we must get older, doesn’t mean we have to stop hav- ing fun! With that said, Let’s Party! Join me for my 60th Birthday Party on May 17, 2024 at 6:30. We will have a band, we will have dessert and we will have fun until we aren’t an- ymore and need to go home and go to bed! Another significant family birthday is also happening! I get to share my party with my dear granddaughter Sophi who will be turning 18 on that day! You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. C.S. This year AARP volunteers prepared 134 returns here at the Center. 70% of these folks were over 60, 75% were single and the average AGI was $35,000.00! What a huge blessing this service is to the Bel- grade Senior Community! Our very own member, Debi Kemp worked tirelessly, overseeing the program here and volunteering in several different locations to help many people through this challenging time of year! It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year And I’m not talking about Christmas! It’s time to start thinking about gardens and flowers and yard work! We have trash that needs picked up, raised beds that need planted and flower beds that need tending and we welcome the help! Dave looks forward to plucking, picking and digging fresh fruit and veggies to serve to our folks and you can be part of all that! Let me know if you would like to help with the yard and gardens! This is also the perfect time for a huge thank you to Rick Gaines who has watched over and tended our yard for many years! We love you, Rick! Did you know that May is Older American Month Every year in May, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults across the nation. While raising families and building ca- reers, older Americans also gave back to their communities in a variety of ways. In their lifetime, times have changed and they continue to volunteer and serve their neighborhoods in their own ways. Whether they mentored children, volunteered at a soup kitchen, or served their country, each one de- serves recognition for their commitment. Older Americans Month also serves to raise awareness concerning elder abuse and neglect. As we age, the risk of abuse and neglect increases. We must be sure resources are in place to protect our older population from the risks of abuse and neglect. One way is to maintain involvement in community activities and social activities. It helps to maintain our overall health and vitality. www.nationaldaycalendar.com/ On May 7, 2024 we will have an Older American Celebration Lunch! We will share stories about careers, family and investing in the community. Join us so we can celebrate YOU! Life’s most persistent and urgent question is, What are you doing for others. Memorial Day Picnic May 24, 2024 Salads, Ribs, Potato Chips, Fruit, Dessert Sign up by May 22, 2024. If the weather is nice, we will dine al fresco in our gazebo! Memorial Day Facts - Memorial Day was officially established as a national public holiday in 1868 by General John A. Logan, head of a group of Union veterans. The holiday was originally called Decoration Day–named for the decoration of soldiers’ graves, but the name gradually changed until it officially became Memorial Day in 1967. - From 1868 to 1970, Memorial Day was celebrated every year on May 30, not the last Monday of May like we do now. It’s unclear why this date was chosen, though some have speculated that it’s because no major battles had occurred on that day, or that spring flowers would be in bloom. - The date was changed in 1968 with the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which moved Memorial Day and four oth- er holidays to Mondays for the sake of creating the three-day weekends we all know and love. Some veterans’ organizations and lawmakers disagree with the change, arguing that it diminishes the holiday’s meaning. -There is a Moment of Remembrance at 3PM on Memorial Day. Congress passed the National Moment of Remem- brance Act in 2000 to encourage people to stop and remember fallen service men and women at 3PM. - Memorial Day is not the same as Veteran’s Day. The latter celebrates all service men and women throughout history, while Memorial Day technically only celebrates those who died while serving. Armed Forces Day is also separate, and honors those who are currently serving. - On Memorial Day morning, the Department of Veterans Affairs guidelines say the flag is supposed to be raised to the top of the pole quickly, and then slowly lowered to half-staff, where it should remain until noon. At noon, the flag should be raised to full staff to honor those who are still serving. ---PAGE BREAK--- Belgrade Senior Center Annual Camping Trip Monday, July 29 - Thursday, August 1, 2024 $90.00 per person or $30.00 for the day. Lower Hyalite Campground RV Space is limited so sign up early. Lunch and dinner will be provided by the Center. There will be lots of visiting, great food, hiking, spending time at the lake and stories around the campfire! WE NEED IDEAS! We find ourselves living in an oxymoronic state here at the Senior Center which poses an interest- ing dilemma! One that is good and bad, bitter and sweet, a conspicuous absence, joyful sadness, a deafening silence and it all brings a sad smile to my face. Our fitness classes have outgrown our humble haunt and due to the most generous offer from the Belgrade School District, we have been able to move these classes to the Quaw gym. My happiness stems from the fact that so many of you are exercising but my heart is broken that the Center is just too quiet and lonesome during those early morning hours of 8:00-10:00! Help us bring life back to the Center and let us know what you would like to see us offer. Beginners Mahjong? Chess? Fly Tying? Cribbage? Coffee Club? Underwater Basket Weaving? We are open to all kinds of suggestions! Better yet, put a group together and let us know what and when! Give me a call or better yet STOP BY BETWEEN 8:00-10:00 Monday—Friday! Since he is such an important part of the Center, I thought I would share his job description with you. Remi is responsible to make sure all the chairs are warmed up and ready. He must be willing to help out wherever needed. Front Desk Volunteer, Bonnie Campbell asked Remi to assist her with answering the phone and writing down the names of people coming to lunch. Remi had to remind her that it’s hard to read his writing because he doesn’t have thumbs but we have all learned to read his scribbles and have commented often that he would make a fine doctor! Remi — or as we like to call him, “Party Planner Extraordinaire” is meticulous when it comes to deco- rating. Here he is preparing for our Birthday Party! He likes playing with his 2nd cousin by marriage, twice removed Remi is so busy with his job, I am sure you are all wondering how he ever finds time to relax and unwind! Here’s a glimpse into his time off! Remi watches a little Dog TV. He knows it’s important to keep learning! And another nap. Sometimes he just likes to hang around. He is an accomplished ship navigator. And he always has time to stop and smell the roses! Once everything is ready, he slips in a quick nap. It’s im- portant to stay well rested so he is happy and excited when the real works begins! Bird puzzles are his favorite!
