Email your news to ---PAGE BREAK--- June is National Safety Month June is U.S. National Safety Month, when people focus on how they can keep their environment safe and free from danger. This week we will focus on Heat-related Illness. ● Heat-Related Illness Exposure to heat can cause illness and death. The most serious heat illness is heat stroke. Other heat illnesses, such as heat exhaustion, heat cramps, and heat rash, should also be avoided. The human body is normally able to regulate its temperature through sweating, until it is exposed to more heat than it can handle. In 2021, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration reported 201 people died and 67 were injured in the U.S. from weather related excessive heat. Risk Factors for Heat Illness: ○ High Temperature and humidity, direct sun exposure, and no breeze or wind ○ Heavy, physical labor ○ No recent exposure to hot workplaces ○ Low liquid intake ○ Waterproof clothing If your job requires you to work outside in hot weather—or if you are expecting to be outside in hot weather for any extended amount of time, ensure you take precautions to minimize the risk of heat-related illnesses. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends: Working shorter shifts until workers have adjusted to the heat ● Staying hydrated and drinking before you get thirsty ● Watching out for co-workers exhibiting signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke ● Taking time to rest and incorporate periodic breaks to cool down ● Wearing loose, lightweight, light colored clothing and a hat ● Drinking fluids, even if you don’t feel thirsty—avoid alcohol and caffeine ● Wearing sunscreen; sunburn affects the body’s ability to cool itself ● Pace yourself when you run or otherwise exert your body Heat-related illnesses can be further broken down by degree of severity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has an infographic of the certain types of heat-related illnesses, signs and and what to do. In the event that a person is not alert or seems confused, this may be an indication of heat stroke. Call 911 IMMEDIATELY and apply ice as soon as possible. The event planning sub-committee hired the company Scraps, on the recommendation of Special Events Coordinator Adelle Burton, to make this vision a reality. Scraps staff provided the team with information about which brands were acceptable for compostable and recyclable goods. After receiving these recommendations, the committee ordered the paper products and utensils from World Centric and we reached out to Ball Aluminum about a donation for the cups. Ball agreed to donate the cups to our event. Thanks to the Employee Committee’s commitment and hard work to make the BBQ a zero waste event, they made a great impact on the City’s Parks team. Here are some comments from the Parks team about the event: “Thank you for making the Employee Appreciation BBQ a zero waste event. This is the first time that the Parks Department could enjoy the event and not have to worry about emptying the trash cans. That may seem like a small gesture to the committee but it spoke volumes to our Team. With gratitude, Steve Gustafson.” “When you have time please send a thank you to the Employee Committee for making the Employee BBQ a zero waste event. Sure was nice not having to change trash barrels after an event. Thanks.” - Jason Garner “Would like to thank everyone for the wonderful and successful barbecue you put on. The parks team is very thankful for your team cleaning up after the event. Thanks once again.” - Darrell Linders “Thank you for the wonderful event on Wednesday. Not having to clean up after the event was really nice.” - Christopher Young. Thank you to the Employee Committee, Adelle, Scraps team members and everyone who contributed to planning a fantastic event that all City team members could enjoy! Email your news to ---PAGE BREAK--- Community and Economic Development Work System AEDA Instrumental in the development and passing of helpful legislation Last Wednesday, Colorado House Bill 23-1189, a tax credit for businesses to contribute to home down payment savings for employees, was signed into law by Governor Polis. Daniel Ryley, Executive Director of AEDA, was integral in the drafting, introduction, and ultimate passing of the bill, which was inspired by AEDA retention visits to Arvada businesses. The idea of an employer investment into home ownership as means to recruit and retain talent was born out of conversations with Arvada business owners struggling to compete for workers in the Denver metro area. Daniel attended the bill signing ceremony where AEDA and the City of Arvada received recognition from bill sponsors Representative Shannon Bird and Senator Rachel Zenzinger.
