Improving the City’s Safety Culture Several City team participants in a City Leadership Academy recently completed a project with the goal to improve employee engagement in the City’s safety culture. The participants interviewed more than 35 employees from all City work systems and asked these interviewees for their ideas on how to increase employee involvement in our safety culture. It was clear from employee responses that there is no single, one-size-fits-all action to initiate and keep employees engaged in the City’s safety culture. However, the Leadership Academy participants were able to develop recommendations based on the feedback from these employees. According to the recommendations, the City should: ● Define our safety culture and programs with greater clarity ● Create more structured safety training programs ● Disseminate safety information across multiple learning platforms ● Incentivize learning about safety and best safety practices Thank you to all the employees who provided feedback to the Leadership Academy participants! If you would like to learn more about this project or have questions about it, please contact Ross Hadden, the City’s Safety Specialist, at [EMAIL REDACTED] or Kirstie Dineen, the Risk and Safety Manager, at [EMAIL REDACTED]. Community and Economic Development Work System Justin Clark Achieves Certified Building Official Designations Justin Clark, Chief Building Official, recently attained Certified Building Official designations in the Legal, Management and Building Codes/Standards focus areas. The designations are offered through the International Code Council (ICC), the leading global source of model codes and standards and building safety solutions that include product evaluation, accreditation, technology, training and certification. Justin’s achievement is no small feat. Once the ICC designation exam process is started, it must be completed in 18 months and requires the vigilant study of 15 books, in addition to other coursework. It’s safe to say that Justin didn’t have much free time to enjoy fishing, as he is pictured doing here. However, now he can get back to the fish! Congratulations Justin! Email your news to
