WEEKLY BRIEFS City of Arvada internal news July 17, 2023 Little Raven Park Naming Celebration The City of Arvada and the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes hosted a naming celebration for Little Raven Park this past Thursday. The park is named in honor of Little Raven, who served as one of the principal chiefs of the Southern Arapaho People and was known as a peacemaker between native tribes of Colorado and white settlers in the 1800s. Tribal government officials and cultural leaders of the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes traveled from Oklahoma to participate in the historic landmark naming celebration, which included cultural celebration songs performed by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Tribes drum group and comments from City and Tribal leaders. The ceremonial ribbon cutting in front of the park sign was done by members of the Little Raven Family. Watch this video and visit the Little Raven Park page on the City website for more information. Email your news to ---PAGE BREAK--- Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Awareness Day On Monday, City Council proclaimed July 26, 2023 Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Awareness Day. This day commemorates the passing of the ADA on July 26, 1990. The act ensures civil rights for people with disabilities in the United States. The City is proud to continue making Arvada more inclusive and accessible for people with disabilities. The Developmental Disabilities Resource Center team members and leadership were in attendance to accept the proclamation from Councilmember Fifer alongside ADA Coordinator, Ann Foster. Thank you to all of our team members who help make the built and digital environment within the City of Arvada more accessible to all of our community members! Safe Community Meet School Resource Officer Nicole Deering Media Services’ James Long has produced videos profiling officers of the Arvada Police Department. Watch this video about SRO Nicole Deering to learn more about her job and hobby! July 4th Enforcement Arvada Police Department officers issued nine summonses for fireworks activity through July 12. Additional notable enforcement activity included the arrest of an individual riding a recklessly on a street closed for pedestrians attending the City fireworks show. Officer Brumbaugh intervened as the rider approached him and he was arrested on multiple charges. Email your news to ---PAGE BREAK--- New Evidence Building Arvada Police Department and City leadership continue to explore options for the construction of a new evidence storage facility. Several locations have been explored and a contract with an architectural firm has been secured. This is excellent news as the PD moves forward with this important improvement! Infrastructure City Hall parking reminder Thank you to those who have changed their parking habits following last week’s message! As a reminder, we would like to remind everyone of where City employees can park their personal vehicles: ● East and South side parking is designated for guest parking. ● Designated City Vehicle (CV) spots in the North lot are reserved for City fleet vehicles. Some of the paint is not very visible. Please use the posted signs in the lot or reference the map and graphic of which spots are reserved. ● The North parking lot adjacent to the post office is for the post office only. Please reference this City Hall parking map. Thank you for being considerate of guest and team members' needs by parking on the East side of the parking lot or along the street. Community and Economic Development Work System Sonora Cinemas de Arvada Official Grand Opening - July 28 Sonora Cinemas de Arvada will host its official grand opening on Friday, July 28 from 5 to 8 p.m. in the former Elvis Cinemas space at 5157 West 64th Avenue in Arvada. The event is free and open to the public and will feature a formal ribbon cutting at 6 p.m. Sonora Cinemas is the only Colorado exhibitor dedicated to showing first-run films in both Spanish and English, with a 50/50 balance promoting an open, family feeling environment for the Spanish-speaking community.
