Elected Official COUNCIL MEMBER PURPOSE: A Council Member is elected by the voters of the City of Arvada for a 4 year term. A Council Member has all the powers, rights, and privileges of a Council Member as described in the Arvada City Code and Arvada City Charter, and is a legislator, a member, and a leader of the City Council. As part of the City of Arvada’s council-manager form of government, a Council Member attends City Council Meetings, and performs various official duties as described in the Arvada City Code and Arvada City Charter, and as described below: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS ● Attend meetings of the council: (regular, special, and emergency meetings), executive sessions, workshops, retreats, or other meetings. ● Review and sign or docusign all ordinances, resolutions, and other approved documents. ● Respond to citizen emails, letters, and phone calls. Direct issues to city manager for resolution. ● Attend annual evaluation sessions of appointees. ● Meet periodically with the mayor and other council members. ● Represent Council at City events. ● Represent Council at Festival Commission's events. ● Represent Council at Chamber of Commerce functions, including Annual Dinner, Awards events, breakfasts ● Attend ribbon cuttings and ground breaking events; deliver prepared or impromptu remarks as appropriate. ● Serve on citizen boards/commissions as approved by council, e.g. Arvada Urban Renewal Authority, Arvada Economic ● Represent the city at Arvada Center functions, e.g. donor appreciation events, opening nights, at school events, e.g. Read Across America, opening day celebrations, etc. ● Continuing Education: Attend and participate in one state-wide and one national conference for elected officials each year. QUALIFICATIONS FOR ELECTION AND TO HOLD OFFICE ● Council Members when nominated and elected shall be a registered elector of the City of Arvada, a citizen of the United States for at least one year (Arvada City Charter Sec. 4.3). ● Council Members cannot be a salaried employee of the City nor any other municipality during his/her term of office (Arvada City Charter Sec. 4.3). ● No individual shall be eligible to hold the office of Mayor, who has been convicted of a felony in any court of the United States within ten (10) years of the date of assuming elected office (Arvada City Charter Sec. 4.3). ● Every elected or appointed officer shall fully comply with all rules of behavior and standards of conduct set forth in this Charter and any ordinance adopted by the City Council (Arvada City Charter Sec. 4.2.1) ● Council Members may not simultaneously hold the office of Mayor and any other federal, state, county, municipal or quasi-municipal elective office. (Arvada City Charter Sec. 1
