Arvada requires sales and use tax to be filed and paid online. How do I apply for a business license? Go to arvada.org/license and fill out a free, online business license application. Within two weeks you should receive your license approval and online tax information. How much is a business license? The business license is free and does not expire. How do I get an online filing account? When new business licenses are set up an online tax filing account and pass- word are also created. If you do not know if you have an account or need to update your email address, it can all be done through the online portal at arvada.org/fileonline. Does Arvada tax food? Yes, Arvada does tax food for home consumption at a rate of 3.46%. How can I learn more? Attend a free sales and use tax class! They are held on the second Thursday of the month at noon in the annex building. Where are you located? We are in the City of Arvada annex building located at 8001 Ralston Road. Sales Tax Information What Is Arvada’s Tax Rate? Arvada operates in two counties so the overall rate can differ. Jefferson County Adams County 2.90% - State 2.90% - State 3.46% - City 3.46% - City 1.10% - 1.10 % - .50% - Jeffco .75% - Adams 7.96% total 8.21% total Who needs a business license? Any business located within the City is required to have a license. Any business that comes into the City to sell, lease, rent, deliver or install tangible personal property is also required to have a license. What do I do if I don’t owe anything? Tax returns must be filed whether anything is owed or not. To make it easier, you can select ‘zero filer’ on the form and submit. When is my return due? Sales and use tax returns are always due on the 20th of the month. What if I don’t file or pay on time? Late filings and payments are assessed a 10% penalty charge and 1% interest per month of delinquency. I made a mistake online, what now? Call us right away so we can help clear out the return or cancel payments. Use Tax Information What is the use tax rate? Arvada’s local use tax rate is 3.46% What is use tax? Use tax covers any tangible personal property, such as furniture, equipment and supplies that is used, stored, or consumed in the City where a local city tax rate hasn’t already been paid. Are items ordered out of city, state or country and brought into the City subject to use tax? Yes, if a local tax has not already been paid that is equal to or greater than Arvada’s use tax rate. How do I report use tax for my business? Use tax is filed through the online sales and use tax portal. Use tax is calculated using the amount reported on the ‘subject to use tax’ line of the sales and use tax return. Do I have any tax liability when I buy a business? Yes, use tax would be due on the purchase of items like furniture, fixtures, equipment, and office supplies associated with the business.
