June is National Safety Month June is U.S. National Safety Month, when people focus on how they can keep their environment safe and free from danger. This week we will focus on hazard recognition. Email your news to ---PAGE BREAK--- What is hazard recognition? Hazard recognition is a means of identifying, assessing and prioritizing hazards, both existing and potential. Hazards are always present, regardless of the location and it is imperative to be able to demonstrate hazard recognition in all areas of your workplace. A hazard assessment is performed by recognizing and assessing the existing and potential hazards of a worksite and assigning those hazard’s controls with the goal of preventing an incident or accident from occurring. Good practices can help prevent workplace hazards from ever occurring or increasing in severity if you: ● Evaluate the work area and activity ● Maintain good housekeeping standards ● Inspect tools and equipment prior to use ● Maintain personal protective equipment per the manufacturer’s specifications ● Follow established procedures; do not take any shortcuts and report hazards and incidents as soon as possible ● Only operate equipment that you are properly trained to use ● Store heavy objects close to the floor and secure items that are stored at a height Utilizing the Hierarchy of Controls can help employees identify the most feasible and effective control methods for abating or eliminating hazards in the workplace. Taking the time to follow just a few of these guidelines can help you and others achieve the most important thing—going home safe at the end of the day to our families, friends, and loved ones.
