WEEKLY BRIEFS City of Arvada internal news August 21, 2023 Ralston Creek Improvements The City is partnering with the Mile High Flood District (MHFD) to improve the stream corridor health, stability and flood-carrying capacity of Ralston Creek near the Westwoods subdivision, just west of the Croke Canal crossing. This area was heavily impacted by the September 2013 floods, resulting in damages to the stream corridor, surrounding property and breaches of the Croke Canal embankment. Each winner will receive a $50 gift card of their choice and a day off. Winners will be recognized in the Weekly Briefs and during the Everyone meetings. At the end of the 4th Quarter, the Employee Committee will take all twelve winners and vote for an Employee of the Year for each value. Bulky Item Drop-Off Event recap The third and final 2023 Bulky Item Drop-Off Event was another great success. The event saw over 1,800 vehicles come through. A huge thank you to the more than 50 City team members who helped make sure everything ran smoothly! Next up will be the leaf recycling events in November. Thanks for coming out to Arvada Days! Huge shoutout to our volunteers! The Arvada Festivals Commission celebrated the end of summer this past weekend with the fifth annual Arvada Days festival on August 19. Thanks to everyone who came out to Clear Creek Valley Park to enjoy all the free, family-fun activities! Special thanks to all our Festival volunteers for all their hard work! The final festival event of the year is Movies Around Town featuring a showing of Monsters, Inc. on Friday, Sept. 8 at Forest Springs Park (6650 Kendrick Dr.). Public Works Department wins award for Lake Arbor Project The Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association (APWA) recognized the City team for the Lake Arbor Restoration project as the winner of the large scale environmental project of the year. The team will be recognized at the annual awards luncheon in October. A huge shout out to Sam Rogers and Melanie Walters for leading the project. Way to go! Diego Ulibarri represents the City at the Transformative Water Leadership Academy Diego Ulibarri, Utility System Technician-Journey Level of the City’s Water Operations Division, recently represented the City of Arvada as a graduate of the inaugural cohort of the Transformative Water Leadership Academy (TWLA). TWLA is “where the next generation of water utility leaders focus on the foundations of sustainable community leadership: how to integrate social, environmental, and financial concerns into important decisions about water utilities.” The academy was hosted by the American Water Works Association (AWWA) and Water Now Alliance and consisted of an intensive 10 month program that included classes, two conferences, and a capstone project. Diego was selected to present his project, the organization of a career fair at Red Rocks Community College, at the final conference in Los Angeles. Email your news to ---PAGE BREAK--- Safe Community Volunteers needed for Victim Outreach, Inc. Victim Outreach, Inc. (VOI) is looking for volunteer advocates for their September 5th academy! Volunteer advocates are called by police to respond on-scene overnight or on weekends. They provide emotional support during a crisis, share information and resources, and are a crucial first step to victims starting on a path of healing and recovery. Volunteer advocates will be provided with in-depth and ongoing training in dynamics of victimization and will gain direct experience in providing support to people in need. They will also gain knowledge about law enforcement and the criminal justice system. Participation will enhance community responsiveness to victims of crime. Community and Economic Development Work System Jeremiah Bebo Promoted to Senior Planner Jeremiah Bebo, AICP, was recently promoted to Senior Planner on the Community and Economic Development team. Jeremiah has been with the City since 2017 and has served in various planning roles of increasing responsibility. He holds a Master’s in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Colorado Denver and believes that strong customer service skills to both the public and development industry help to create a more transparent and successful government.
