Some of us have a harder time fighting off respiratory infections, so it’s important to be extra careful to avoid becoming sick. Conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) make it more difficult to clear dust, pollutants and invading organisms from your lungs. As a result, colds and other respiratory infections may last longer or make your daily harder to manage. Avoiding infections: Learn how to protect yourself from respiratory illness Avoid smoke and other irritants. Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. Ask your doctor whether you should receive the pneumonia vaccine. Eat a healthy diet with a variety of foods, and drink plenty of water each day. Clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated with cold or flu germs. + Get your flu shot every year as soon as it is available. If you smoke, quit; smoking makes your lungs more vulnerable to infection. Get enough sleep and rest every day. Keep your distance from sick people, and crowds. Wash your hands often with soap and water, or use an alcohol- based rub, especially in public places.
