Water and Energy Education Programs Explorations for students and teachers We provide the following educational programs to Anaheim public and private elementary schools to awaken young minds to the importance of conserving natural resources, protecting the environment, and learning to use water and energy efficiently in their daily lives. There are several educational programs from which to choose. Feel free to sign up for more than one. Energy Education Programs Students take a 60-minute journey into the world of electricity. Visual aids, printed materials and hands-on activities teach them to use electricity safely and wisely. Age-appropriate presentations are available as follows: Fourth-grade students ZAP – You’re It! Fifth-grade students Be Electri-Bright! Sixth-grade students WATTS in Your Future? Teachers, you can get more information, schedule classes and/or receive teachers’ kits to prepare students for the lessons by calling the Oak Canyon Nature Center at 714/998-8380. Discovery Science Center Water Education Program Anaheim Public Utilities, in partnership with the Municipal Water District of Orange County (MWDOC), provides grade-specific water education classes, field trips, and teacher workshops through the Discovery Science Center in Santa Ana. The curriculum for first through fifth graders covers basic facts about the water cycle, water treatment, water storage and water recycling. The program is designed to help youngsters appreciate water as our most precious natural resource. They will learn how they can help protect it through pollution prevention and water conservation. Teachers are encouraged to visit MWDOC’s Website at www.mwdoc.com to learn more about the program and to obtain teachers’ kits for the classes. To schedule a class, call 714/913-5012. ---PAGE BREAK--- Water Conservation Poster Contest Anaheim Public Utilities hosts an annual water conservation poster contest to help celebrate the month of May as California’s Water Awareness Month. First through Sixth graders are invited to create colorful posters depicting water conservation at home, at school, in agriculture, or in business and industry. First-, second- and third-place winners are selected from each grade and are honored at a special pre-game ceremony at Angel Stadium. Each first-place winner also receives a $100 savings bond. TreePower Anaheim Public Utilities’ TreePower offers program to help educate second- through sixth-grade children about nature’s cooling system – trees. TreePower staff facilitates the learning experience at schools, libraries and community centers, showing participants how trees can conserve energy. Activities may include planting trees, taking tree measurements, harvesting acorns or even taking park tree walks. As an added bonus, schools that participate in the TreePower program, which provides free shade trees, can enhance the educational experience by having students observe the growth and progress of trees they have planted. We design programs to meet the needs of the participants and address the season. We offer curriculum materials at no charge to the students or the schools.
