ANAHEIM, CA - (December 10, 2012) - The Anaheim Ci zens Advisory Commiee on Elec ons and Community Involvement (CAC) invites the community to aend its next scheduled mee ng on Thursday, Dec. 13, which will offer a presenta on on the California Vo ng Rights Act from Jus n Levi, Associate Professor of Law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles. The mee ng will take place at Trident Educa on Center (at Gilbert High School, 1800 W. Ball Road, Anaheim, CA 92804), star ng at 6:30 p.m. The mee ng agenda and related items are posted online at www.anaheim.net/CACElec ons. In addi on to the California Vo ng Rights presenta on, commiee members previously requested the opportunity to learn about similar ci zen commissions on electoral systems created by other ci es. At the December 13 mee ng, the CAC will hear from Wayne Dernetz from the City of Vista and George Petrulakis from the City of Modesto regarding their experiences with ci zens commissions on elec ons. The purpose of the CAC is to promote the full par cipa on of all residents, neighborhoods, community groups and ethnic groups rela ng to the City’s electoral system. The CAC, scheduled to meet on a basis at loca ons throughout the City, will report its findings and recommenda ons directly to the City Council by May 31, 2013, including recommenda ons on: · Poten al changes in the City’s elec on systems, including elec on by district; · How to encourage voter registra on; · How to iden fy and engage community groups in elec ons and in local government decision making; · Language assistance programs; and · Other techniques to promote full par cipa on in the electoral process. Any proposed changes to the City’s governance structure may be placed on the June 2014 ballot to ensure that any organiza onal changes are effec ve by the next regular general municipal elec on in November 2014, if so desired by the electorate of Anaheim.
