Led by Chief Radio Operator Lt. Chris Kielich of the Anaheim Police Department, volun- teers gathered at the park at 8 a.m. on Satur- day morning and within the hour had the an- tenna up and operational. At 11 a.m., our vol- unteers started to make radio contact with other operators within California and across the nation. Points were given for each new contact and/or pre-designated location reached. The information that was received on each radio station contacted was entered into a logging program which tracks the lo- cation and call-signs of every new contact made. Extra points were given if the operator is a juve- nile and successfully makes contact with an- other new radio station. As the exercise pro- ceeded into the evening, some of the volun- teers went home while others stayed up and continued to make contacts throughout the night to return the next morning. By the end of the exercise, over 300 contacts were made with amateur radio operators across the nation. This was Anaheim RACES first Field Day Exercise and proved to be a great success. We look for- ward to next year’s Field Day Exercise and hope to increase the number of contacts made.
