PROJECT OVERVIEW POWER PLANT SUSTAINABLE ELEMENTS anaheim public utilities : : anaheim.net/utilities CANYON This state-of-the-art, 200-megawatt natural gas powered generating plant can produce enough power to provide energy to 150,000 residential customers annually. Sustainable elements help to make this Facility one of a kind: 100% recycled water is used to reduce exhaust emissions; thermal energy storage technology is used to create air- conditioning; and energy created from solar panels helps to provide power to the Plant Control Room. Having this power Anaheim owned and produced will create millions in cost savings to our Anaheim customers. • CALIFORNIA-FRIENDLY LANDSCAPING Surrounded by a sound wall to minimize any excess noise, the Plant’s aesthetics are enhanced with California-friendly landscaping. • RECYCLED WATER 100% high-purity recycled water is used, instead of precious drinking water, to help reduce exhaust emissions. • THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE Energy-efficient technology that freezes water into ice at night, then blows air over the ice during the daytime to provide air conditioning for the Plant Operations Building. • SOLAR PANELS Solar panels on the rooftop of the Plant Control Room help to capture the sun’s rays and provide enough energy for the Facility to power more than 25 residential homes. • SILVER LEED CERTIFICATION International accreditation from the U.S. Green Building Council confirms the Plant Control Room was designed with the following key areas: human and environmental health, water savings, energy efficiency, material selection, and indoor environmental quality. ---PAGE BREAK--- A DETAILED LOOK DID YOU KNOW D. GAS TURBINE Commercial-sized gas jet engines turn each of the four 50-megawatt generators to produce electricity. E. THERMAL ENERGY STORAGE Energy-efficient technology that freezes water into ice at night, then blows air over the ice during the daytime to provide air conditioning for the Plant Operations Building. F. PLANT OPERATIONS BUILDING Houses the computers and controllers, allowing the Plant Operators to start and manage the power plant. The attached warehouse provides space for parts to be repaired on-site. • Canyon Power Plant is one of the few power plants to be built in California over the past several years • Over 200 new jobs were created during construction • The project was built within 18 months — six months ahead of target • The Facility utilizes state-of-the-art technology to control air emissions that exceed the South Coast Air Quality Management District (AQMD) and the California Energy Commission (CEC) standards • The Facility uses clean natural gas, which helps reduce carbon dioxide emissions from electric generation by over 300 million pounds Equivalent to taking approximately 26,000 cars off the road • Producing our own power will help Anaheim save over 7 million dollars, reducing the need to purchase costly out-of-state power Helps to keep our electric rates among the lowest in Orange County • The on-site 69kV switchgear station is fully enclosed— which secures the power from being exposed to local environmental conditions • Recycled water is used to help lower exhaust emissions from the four commercial-sized gas turbines A. NATURAL GAS COMPRESSOR Takes the natural gas and compresses it up to 680 pounds, which help the gas turbines to run more efficiently. B. WATER TANKS These tanks store the recycled water before minerals are removed during purification. The pure recycled water is injected into the turbines to help reduce the exhaust emissions. C. CHILLER Using the cooling towers and condensers to chill water to 46 degrees, this unit helps the gas turbines run more efficiently. A B F E D C
