The park covers a buried structure that encloses Anaheim’s newest electrical distribution substation, appropriately named Park Substation. “With 2,500 new homes and businesses being planned, we needed a second substation in Anaheim Hills to support load growth and prevent overloading other substations in the area,” said Marcie Edwards, Utilities general manager. “By building this facility into the hillside and putting a park above it,neighbors now have a new recreation area, rather than the traditional substation you may see in other communities. It’s truly a ‘win-win’ situation for everyone.” For the past couple of years, Anaheim Public Utilities has staged several neighborhood meetings to get public input on the substation and the new park. “When the neighbors learned they would be among the first in the nation to benefit from this cutting-edge substa- tion, residents jumped to do their part,” Edwards said. “The traditional NIMBY (not in my back yard) reaction, when people learn that a power substation is planned for their neighborhood, was never an issue with this facility.”Edwards believes residents truly appreciated the fact that the Utility brought them into the project during the early stages and lis- tened to what they had to say. “The neighbors embraced the park concept and were quick to give us their input,” she said. “Throughout construction, we provided them periodic up- dates, and they joined us for the dedication.” The gas-insulated switchgear technology inside the station reduces the space required for conventional open-air substa- tions by about two-thirds. Since Park Substation was being built underground, the Utility saw an opportunity to give even more back to the community by topping off the site with a neighborhood park. Siemens Power Transmission and Distribution, Inc., a North Carolina-based company that designed and manufac- tured the substation equipment, confirmed that the park and substation combination is indeed the first one to be built in the United States. There are similar facilities worldwide in Canada, Spain, Germany, Japan and Australia. By the end of 2006, as children excitedly play in their new park, Anaheim’s first underground substation will be quietly working, providing the power that helps fuel Anaheim’s eco- nomic growth and enriches the lives of the City’s residents, businesses and visitors. ❚ View of mountains from Roosevelt Park above Park Substation Anaheim Public Utilities celebrated a landmark event on October 17 with the dedication of Roosevelt Park and Park Substation in Anaheim Hills Anaheim Public Utilities Celebrates “One-of-a-Kind” Electric Substation ---PAGE BREAK--- 11 Winter 2007 ❚Anaheim Upcoming events at Honda Center 2695 E. In 1857, a group of German farmers and vintners settled along the Santa Ana River to grow grapes and make wine. They named their new home Anaheim; “Ana” for the Santa Ana River and “heim,” or home in German. The City of Anaheim began as an agrarian com- munity, with grapes, nuts and citrus being its primary crops.Today,Anaheim is known as one of the world’s leading entertainment, sports, leisure and con- vention destinations because of its state- of-the-art venues and theme parks. Synergizing with the 2007 Rose Parade theme, of “Our Good Nature,” the float will feature both the City’s historical agricultural roots while high- lighting its contemporary landmarks. Decorated with a wide array of color- ful flowers, oranges, grapes and other fruits,a depiction of the Santa Ana River will run through the center of the float. In July, Boeing announced the relocation of its Canyon facility. This combined with the availability of other space, allows more than 170 acres of industrial property to be con- sidered for redevelopment. Uses include medical, office, industrial business parks and a transit-oriented condominium development adjacent to one of Anaheim’s Metrolink stations. To encourage developers to be environmentally friendly, Anaheim Public Utilities is offering financial incentives to “build green,” including fast track permitting, fee waivers and technical assistance to businesses in this area. These benefits are already receiving positive responses from the development community. The Canyon, located along La Palma Boulevard, north of State Route 91 and east of State Route 57, also offers a prime Southern California location with easy access to freeways and commuter rail.
