RESIDENTIAL ELECTRIC SERVICE FOR A NEW HOME If you are building a new home and are ready to apply for electrical service, please follow the steps below to receive electrical service and meter installation through Anaheim Public Utilities. This handout is meant for customers building single-family homes (not major projects like housing tracts). If you have a major project such as a housing tract or require temporary power for construction, please contact Electrical Engineering at [PHONE REDACTED] for assistance with your electrical service request. Step 1: Application & Meter Spot First, contact Customer Service by telephone to apply for new electrical service and meter installation. If you prefer, you may also apply in-person on the 1st Floor of Anaheim West Tower, formerly City Hall West. You will be asked to provide the residential address of the property being serviced, your phone number, and a convenient time to be reached. Afterward, an Anaheim Public Utilities Electrical Utility Inspector will contact you within 2 business days to schedule an inspection of your proposed meter location. Upon approval of your meter location, you will be given a meter spot report — please keep this with you to present to a Building Inspector at a later time. Anaheim Blvd. [PHONE REDACTED] Step 3: Electrical Utility Service Plan After receiving a building permit, you may request an electrical service plan at the Electrical Engineering counter on the 7th Floor of Anaheim West Tower. To get your request processed, please have the following items available with you to provide: A site layout and elevation plan (from your architect); A description of all major appliances that will be installed (e.g. air conditioner, pool pumps, or high motor loads). Step 2: Building Permit If your meter spot report has been issued to you AND your building plans have been approved by the Building Division, you are ready to apply for a building permit. If you have not submitted your building plans for approval yet, please refer to the Building Division’s handout, “Single-Family Dwelling or Duplex Submittal Requirements,” for information and instructions on submittal procedures. To apply for a building permit, visit the Building Division located on the 1st Floor of City Hall. Please note that there will be a fee for your building permit. You may pay for your permit by check, debit, or Visa/MasterCard; if you wish to pay by cash, you will be directed to the Cashier at Anaheim West Tower. Building Division City Hall, 1st Floor, 200 S. Anaheim Blvd. [PHONE REDACTED] Hours: M-F 8am-5pm ---PAGE BREAK--- Step 5: Final Inspections & Meter Installation After installing your electrical panel, you will need to receive two inspections: a building inspection to check your panel and other related construction issues; a utility inspection to check from the power source to the panel. First, call the Building Inspection Line to request an electrical service/meter inspection from the Building Division — you will be asked to provide your meter spot report during the time of your scheduled inspection. After passing the electrical service/meter inspection, a Utility Electrical Inspector will contact you to arrange for a final utility inspection. Upon passing the final utility inspection and when all required fees have been paid, a service crew will automatically be scheduled to energize your panel and install a new meter for you within 2-4 business days. If you prefer to schedule installation for a specific time/date, please call [PHONE REDACTED]. If you have any questions about the status of your installation request, please contact Customer Service at [PHONE REDACTED] between 8am - 5pm, Monday through Friday. Anaheim Blvd. [PHONE REDACTED] Hours: M-F 8am-5pm Step 3: Electrical Utility Service Plan (continued) An Electrical Engineering representative will contact you when your electrical service plan has been designed (please allow for 5-10 business days from the date of your request to have your plan designed). Upon notice that your electrical service plan has been completed, you may pick up your plan from the Electrical Engineering counter or request that it be mailed to you. You will also receive a bill for fees associated with your electrical utility service plan and meter installation costs. The bill will have instructions on how you can pay your fees by mail or over-the-counter at the Cashier (located on the 1st floor of Anaheim West Tower). Step 4: Trenching & Panel Installation After receiving both your building permit AND your electrical service plan, you are ready to begin the trenching portion of your project. About 48 hours prior to trenching, please call a Public Utility Inspector to notify them about your work plan. An inspector will arrive to check that your trench work and conduits meet requirements. After your trench and conduits have been inspected and approved, your meter panel may be installed according to your electrical service plan. Anaheim Public Utilities recommends that a licensed and qualified electrician install your meter panel. Public Utilities Electrical Inspector [PHONE REDACTED]
