County of Alpine Adopted 12/21/2021 SENIOR DEPUTY PROBATION OFFICER DEFINITION Under general direction, participates in the more complex, sensitive, and specialized probation duties; performs a variety of duties related to intake, court and field probation services for juvenile and adult probationers; provides recommendations to the court; manages assigned caseload; provides counseling and guidance; enforces the conditions of the probation; investigates, coordinates and provides direct services for probation related programs; and perform other related duties as assigned. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is an advanced/ lead level classification. Incumbents work under general direction and exercise a high level of discretion and independent judgement in performing the full range of routine to complex specialized probation work. Incumbents may also provide lead direction to other probation officers. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Plans and conducts probation services for adults and juveniles; ensures that services are provided according to federal and state laws, local ordinances, rules and regulations; develops plans to satisfy the future needs of the department.  Prepares pre-sentence and bail reports for Superior Court of California, County of Alpine, felony cases, which involves conducting interviews and investigations; appears in court.  Prepares affidavits and reports related to probation violations, prepares reports and related recommendations for the disposition of probation cases; prepares petitions and related reports regarding change in pleas.  Performs and prepares civil investigations upon appointment by the Court for various proceedings, such as guardianships, conservatorships, adoptions and family law custody cases.  Conducts field surveillance, installs electronic monitoring equipment and ensures that probationers honor the conditions of their probation/house arrest.  Takes probationers into custody as necessary, utilizing effective restraining devices and practices in accordance with established state law and county policy.  Represents the Probation Department at hearings and meetings as assigned. ---PAGE BREAK--- Senior Deputy Probation Officer Page 2 MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Principles, methods, techniques, and services involved in modern probation work, and in the operation of a juvenile home facility. Federal and state laws, local ordinances, and rules and regulations related to probation activities. Community resources necessary to assist in crime and delinquency prevention. Victim/Witness assistance and treatment of clients, including counseling and resource referrals. Modern office practices and technology, including the use of computers for data and word processing. English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Business letter and report writing. Ability to: Interpret, analyze and apply federal, state, and local laws, rules and regulations, policies and procedures pertaining to department operations. Exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Represent the county effectively in meetings with others and make presentations to various groups. Prepare complex records, reports and recommendations. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Use computers for word and data processing. ---PAGE BREAK--- Senior Deputy Probation Officer Page 3 Education: Graduation from college or university with a major in criminology, social welfare, sociology, or closely related field. Experience: Three years of progressively responsible professional probation experience. Other Requirements: Possession of a valid driver’s license. Completion of the Basic Probation Course as certified by the Board of Corrections Certificate for Deputy Probation Officer Core Training and evidence of continued compliance with annual training requirements. Possession of a CPR-First Aid Certificate is desirable. Must be able to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating office equipment and hand tools. Must be able to use a telephone to communicate verbally and a keyboard to communicate through written means, to review information and enter/retrieve data, to see and read characters on a computer screen.
