How to use Overdrive ebooks From our website click on the Library To Go link from any device to get to the Overdrive homepage. At the very top of the page on the left will be an option to “Sign In”. When you first sign in it will ask you to select your Library (Alpine County Library) and enter your Library card number. If you do not know your Library card number you can call the Library at (530) 694-2120 and we will give you that information over the phone. Once you are signed in you can search through a wide variety of titles. Those titles that are currently available will say available above the photo of the books’ cover. When you select on a title it will give you an option to “Borrow” or “Read a Sample.” The “Read a Sample” option will open a new box with the first page of the book on it, using your finger or mouse pull the page to the left to turn it. The sample will allow you to read the first several pages of the book to determine whether or not it is something you want to borrow. When you select on the “Borrow” option the site will give you an option of how many days you would like to borrow the book (up to 21 days) and give you an option to “Borrow” or “Cancel”. (Cancel allows you to cancel the request if you clicked on the title by mistake). Once you choose how many days you want to borrow the book for and select the “Borrow” option the screen will inform you of the title’s expiration date and how many more titles you are allowed to borrow (you are allowed to borrow up to 9 titles at any one time). It will also give you an option to “Read now in browser” which will allow you to read the book immediately online (use your finger or mouse to pull the page to the left to turn it) or “Download” which will allow you to save the book to your device for later reading. To download the title your device must have Adobe Digital Editions installed. Once a book has been borrowed, if you have the Libby App installed on your phone the title will be immediately available on the Libby App to be read on your phone. Some books will also have an option to “Read Now with Kindle”. If you are specifically looking for titles that can be read on a Kindle there is also an option at the very top of the Overdrive homepage for “Kindle Books” this will show you all of the titles on Overdrive that are able to be read on a Kindle device. Once you have found a Kindle Compatible title select on the “Borrow” option and then the “Read Now with Kindle” option. You will then be taken to the amazon website to enter your amazon unsername and password in order to link your amazon acct with your overdrive acct. After your two accounts have been linked and a Kindle compatible title has been borrowed, the title will automatically be transferred to your kindle for reading. If a title is not currently available you will be given an option to “Place A Hold”. You will then be asked to provide an email address so that you can be contacted when the title does become available.
