County of Alpine Adopted: 2/21/2012 TRANSIT DRIVER DEFINITION Under general supervision, responsible for operating the County’s Dial-A-Ride vehicle including, but not limited to, driving passengers from the Markleeville area to and from neighboring communities in California and Nevada per the Dial-A-Ride service area, assisting and securing people with disabilities and those in wheelchairs, performing daily vehicle inspections, fueling the vehicle, scheduling rides, keeping records on ridership including origin and destination of trips, mileage and hours of operation and related work as required. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS This is a permanent part-time appointment. Work hours are primarily three days per week for vehicle operation with additional time to complete required reports for typical work of 24-32 hours per week. Days and hours of work are subject to change or adjustment. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Safely operate a passenger van, minivan, or cutaway bus within the Dial-A-Ride service area or other approved area to transport the general public, senior citizens, individuals with special needs and other persons to scheduled destinations;  Answer voice mails, schedule rides, and return phone calls to confirm origin and destination of each ride at the beginning and end of each work shift;  Use physical strength and abilities for passenger assistance getting on and off the vehicle, which includes pushing and pulling wheelchairs;  Practice safe driving techniques and follow passenger safety procedures;  Operate wheelchair lift equipment and secures wheelchair as appropriate;  Obey traffic laws and follow department operating practices and procedures;  Maintain the interior and exterior of the assigned vehicle;  Conducts pre-operation vehicle inspections to ensure safe vehicle condition;  Read and write to complete driver worksheets and other related reports throughout and end of shift;  Follow all applicable safety rules and regulations; and  Practice effective customer relations and complaint processing. MIMIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Any combination of education, training, and work experience to demonstrate possession of the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform in the position is qualifying. A typical combination is as follows: ---PAGE BREAK--- Knowledge of:  California Motor Vehicle Code and traffic regulations;  Methods, materials and equipment used in vehicular transport of persons;  Safe driving;  Work practices; and  Customer service practices. Ability to:  Safely and properly operate a passenger van, minivan, or cutaway bus; including operation in inclement weather and on variable road conditions where rain, snow and ice may be present on the roadway;  Conduct vehicle safety check;  Operate wheelchair ramp, lifts and similar devices;  Provide passenger assistance getting on and off the vehicle;  Answer voice mails, schedule rides and return phone calls to confirm origin and destination of each ride;  Respond to customer inquiries;  Work under minimal supervision;  Deal effectively and courteously with public;  Work with others contacted in the performance of duties in a cooperative and effective manner;  Read, follow, and carry out oral and written instructions;  Complete daily log sheet data and other required reports;  Maintain an acceptable driving record and required valid license and certificate requirements during the course of employment in the position;  Communicate on a two-way radio; and  Present a positive image of the County Dial-a-Ride service. Education:  High school graduate or equivalent. Experience:  Experience driving a vehicle;  Experience answering voice mails; and  Experience working with others. Other Requirements:  Mandatory to have a valid State driver’s license  If hired as a Transit Driver, drug and alcohol testing will be administered as follows: ---PAGE BREAK--- o Pre-employment; o Post accident; o Reasonable suspicion; o Random testing; o Return to work; and o Follow-up testing.  An employee assigned a County vehicle must acknowledge receipt and understanding of County regulations covering the use of County vehicles. TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Work is performed indoors and outdoors.  Driving work is performed outdoors in a vehicle exposed to seasonal climate and weather conditions;  Drives are for a prolonged period of time requiring continuous sitting;  Indoor work is performed at a desk answering voice mails, scheduling rides and completing daily traffic info;  Must be able to see, hear, and communicate within normal ranges;  Hand and foot manipulation to operate vehicle controls to drive;  Safely lift, push and/or pull in excess of 100 pounds; and  Exposure to traffic noise, gas fumes while fueling, vibration of the steering wheel and to extremes in temperature depending on the weather.
