County of Alpine Adopted 05/07/02 LIBRARY ASSISTANT III DEFINITION Under direction, to perform a wide variety of para-professional and technical library and responsible clerical work; to provide administrative assistance to the Director of Library and Archives Services; and to perform related duties as assigned. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS The Library Assistant III classification is distinguished from the Library Assistant I and II classes by its responsibility for overseeing the daily operations of the branch library. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following: Oversees the daily operations of the County’s branch library, ensuring compliance with all applicable policies, procedures and standards. Provides training and assistance to library support staff as assigned. Performs circulation work, including checking materials in and out of the Library, processing returned materials, and preparing them for reshelving. Receives, researches and responds to patrons’ reference requests; locates and provides requested materials and information. Reserves library materials and notifies patrons of their availability. Initiates and processes inter-library loan requests. Prepares and conducts children’s programs, including story times, arts and crafts classes, and other special programs and events. Troubleshoots computer problems; assists patrons in using the library’s public access computers and other library equipment. Ensures the proper maintenance of library facilities and equipment. Designs and prepares publicity materials, newsletters and informational fliers. Maintains fiscal and circulation statistics; compiles summaries and prepares related reports. Maintains a pleasant and orderly atmosphere in library public and work areas. ---PAGE BREAK--- Library Assistant III Page 2 Maintains efficient branch library operations. Receives and responds to public inquiries, requests for assistance and complaints regarding department policies, programs and personnel. Performs general administrative and clerical duties as required, including but not limited to attending meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, sending and receiving faxes, answering the telephone, etc. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Pertinent County and library policies, procedures and standards. General functions and operations of a public library. Library terminology and standard library practices. Principles and procedures of collection development, cataloging, classifying and processing library materials. Library reference, circulation and inter-library loan procedures. Alphabetical, numerical and topical filing systems. Research methods and resources. Structure and use of the Dewey Decimal classification system. Computer technology as it applies to library operations. The use of the Internet for employee / patron research and reference assistance, including various laws, regulations and guidelines governing appropriate Internet access and filtering. Principles of leadership and training. Public / community relations techniques. Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. ---PAGE BREAK--- Library Assistant III Page 3 Modern office practices and technology, including records maintenance and the use of computers for word and data processing. Basic business arithmetic. Report and letter writing techniques. Ability to: Understand, interpret, explain and apply County and library policies, procedures and standards. Provide effective leadership and training as assigned. Use initiative and sound, independent judgment within established guidelines. Oversee the daily operations of a branch library. Sort and organize materials in alphabetical, numerical and topical order. Locate, sort and arrange materials according to the Dewey Decimal classification and other specialized library index systems. Perform library circulation and reference work independently and effectively. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Prepare clear, concise, and competent reports, correspondence and other written materials. Operate a computer and routinely access the Internet. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Type or word process accurately at a rate sufficient to ensure successful job performance. Deal tactfully and effectively with library patrons of various ages, educational and cultural backgrounds. Maintain a positive public image of department programs and services through contact with the general public and through preparation of various publicity materials. ---PAGE BREAK--- Library Assistant III Page 4 Safely operate basic office equipment. Perform required mathematical computations accurately. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by college-level coursework in library science. Experience: Two years of experience as a Library Assistant II in Alpine County, or four years of progressively responsible technical and clerical library experience. Other Requirements: Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
