County of Alpine Adopted 05/07/02 Revision adopted 06/16/2015 MUSEUM CURATOR DEFINITION Under the administrative direction of the Alpine County Board of Supervisors, to manage the operations of the Alpine County Historical Complex in accordance with the Manual of Policies and Procedures adopted by the Board of Directors of the Historical Society of Alpine County; and to perform related duties as assigned. CLASS CHARACTERISTICS The Museum Curator is a single position classification responsible for the operation of the Alpine County Museum Complex. EXAMPLES OF DUTIES – Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:  Plans, directs and oversees the operations of the Alpine Historical Complex, ensuring compliance with the provisions of the Manual of Policies and Procedures as adopted by the Historical Society of Alpine County Board of Directors.  Serves as liaison to the Society’s Board of Directors.  Supervises, trains and evaluates the performance of museum staff and volunteers.  Administers the museum budgets; secures and administers grant funds for program and project funding.  Develops and implements effective methods of generating museum revenue.  Manages and assists with daily operations of the museum store; orders merchandise.  Manages the acquisition, management, display and security of museum artifacts.  Provides professional curatorial and archival maintenance of the museum’s collections; restores and preserves items as needed.  Researches all artifacts in collections and those offered for donation or loan; determines their authenticity and whether they meet display criteria; recommends acceptance or rejection of donation; prepares all related reports and correspondence.  Designs, constructs and maintains museum exhibits.  Catalogs the museum collection. ---PAGE BREAK--- MuseumCurator Page 2  Assists students and the general public with research into genealogy, County history, natural history and other topics.  Provides interpretive presentations and programs for school and community groups.  Ensures the proper maintenance of museum building and grounds.  Monitors and reports on museum attendance and revenue.  Performs general administrative duties as required, including but not limited to attending and conducting meetings, preparing reports and correspondence, ordering supplies and equipment, maintaining records, etc.  Coordinates museum activities with other County departments, government agencies, community and civic organizations as appropriate. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Knowledge of: Pertinent federal, state and County laws, codes, rules, policies and procedures. Administrative principles and methods, including goal setting, program and budget development and implementation. Organizational and management practices as applied to the analysis and evaluation of programs, policies and operational needs. Budget administration methods. Fund-raising and sponsorship solicitation techniques; grant writing and administration. Principles of supervision and performance evaluation. Principles of volunteer recruitment, training and supervision. Principles and practices of museum collection management and operations. Methods, materials and tools used in the cleaning, repair, maintenance, preservation, storage and display of various artifacts. Exhibit design and construction techniques, materials and tools. Museum, art, historical and natural history organizations and societies. ---PAGE BREAK--- MuseumCurator Page 3 Public / community relations techniques. Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar, punctuation and vocabulary. Modern office practices and technology, including the records maintenance and the use of computers for word and data processing. The use of cameras and related equipment in exhibit and curatorial work. Basic business arithmetic. Report and letter writing techniques. Ability to: Understand, interpret, explain and apply pertinent federal, state and County laws, codes, rules, policies and procedures. Effectively supervise, train and evaluate the performance of assigned staff and volunteers. Prepare and administer budgets and grants. Analyze documents, data and situations, and take appropriate action regarding procedural matters without immediate supervision. Exercise sound independent judgment within general policy guidelines. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing. Become familiar with Alpine County history and geography. Research and identify artifacts of value to the museum’s collection. Properly clean, repair, preserve, store and display artifacts. Plan and implement effective museum programming and events. Write and edit technical articles pertaining to museum science. Research, compile, analyze, organize and present technical and statistical information. Prepare clear, concise, and competent reports, correspondence and other written materials. Use computers effectively for word and data processing. Safely operate basic office equipment and specialized museum equipment. ---PAGE BREAK--- MuseumCurator Page 4 Perform required mathematical computations accurately. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work. Represent the County effectively in meetings with others. Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent supplemented by any combination of course work and training which would provide an opportunity to acquire the knowledge and abilities listed; Experience: At least two years of experience in Archives, collection management or museum technology. Other Requirements: Possession of a valid California driver’s license. Must be able to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading and writing, and operating office equipment and hand tools. Must be able to use a telephone to communicate verbally and a keyboard to communicate through written means, to review information and enter/retrieve data, to see and read characters on a computer screen.
