Home Heating Fire Safety Fire Prevention Tips… ALWAYS keep furnishings and combustibles (paper, bedding, clothes, rugs, etc.) at least 36” away from any heating source. NEVER use a cooking range or oven to heat or supplement the heat in your home! NEVER leave a heater or fire in a fireplace burning unattended! Keep/store matches or fire starting appliances out of the reach of children. Space Heaters… ALWAYS use in accordance with the manufacturer’s specifications and instructions. ALWAYS place the heater on a flat surface. When purchasing a space heater look for ones that have an automatic shut-off and have been tested by an independent laboratory. Avoid using an extension cord and keep children and pets away from space heaters. Wood Burning Stoves & Fireplaces NEVER burn trash in your wood stove or fireplace! When disposing of ashes, make sure to place them in a metal container with a tight fitting lid. Make sure to place the container outside away from the structure. Make sure to use a fireplace screen. Make sure to have your chimney inspected once a year by a qualified chimney sweep. Make sure to check your detectors and practice your home escape plan.
